Yes, it should be mandatory. At the very least, liability insurance. Someone that drives around without car insurance is unacceptable. If they hit someone you have to file the claim on your own insurance and risk higher premiums. If these people can afford a vehicle then they can get insurance if not they should use public transportation. It is not fair to be a responsible citizen put at risk by those that drive around premium free and reckless. |

Actually, you are wrong. Car insurance IS mandatory if you don't have the financial backing to pay for damages. You should see the wondrous fines that MN tacks onto anybody without insurance that is pulled over in our state. You are not allowed to drive in most states without insurance regardless of what your state requires.
I was hit by an uninsured guy in NH back when they didn't have mandatory insurance. I sued him and won. Garnished his wages. He finally paid up after 5 years. So, yeah, if they don't have two sticks to rub with, you can haunt them for life. |

I thought it was illegal not to have car insurance throughout the US |

It should be mandatory. I live in a state where it is but part of our premium is coverage for accidents with under-insured or un-insured motorists. |

Yep. Some people don't even have 2 nickles to rub together. What happens if they hit me? My car insurance skyrockets because I am responsible enough to be prepared!
I think the insurance industry has its problems but it wouldn't be there if it weren't necessary! |

ABsolutely! They just changed the law in North Carolina to accomodate the problem with the ever-growing immigrant influx. We had that issue in New York where some of them banged up some New York residents only to find out they didn't have licenses and were illegal. Meanwhile, the NY resident is in the hospital with thousands of dollars in damage and medical fees, while the illegal merely gets deported. Unbelieveable.
But even if they weren't illegal, why should an innocent be put through this medical and financial misery when the guilty party isn't responsible enough to even have insurance? That right there says you should'nt own a 3,000lb. mechanical machine of death! |

It says a lot about your character, please be responsible and buy insurance. So I don't have to pay more when you hit my car. |

LOL honey... the insured ones drive like lunatics, too! I live in a state where it is mandatory to have at least liability insurance. If your vehicle is financed, the finance companies here require that you carry full-coverage insurance. I think it's stupid not to carry full-coverage insurance whether your car is financed or paid-in-full. Our car is financed, but we carry the top of the line full-coverage insurance. We happen to live in a city where people drive with their heads inserted! I swear...none of them watch where they are going and the center turn lane is an absolute mystery to them all! |

Car insurance is mandatory here in good old England (Britain). I think that the U.S. should adopt our law of the the car and the driver being insured. If our cars or we are not insured then it is illegal to drive. Our cars have to be checked each year to make sure that they are roadworthy as well through the MOT test. The U.S. has to adopt these measures. |

It is Mandatory in British Columbia to have Car Insurance, but not Collision Coverage. I know 4 people that were hit by someone from WA state and good thing he had Insurance on his car (guy from WA state).
Thing is my friend that got hit by this person from WA state didn't have Collision Coverage and he only had $200,000 3rd party liability Insurance. My friends are suing the guy from WA state and the friend that got hit, because the he was going excessive speed in a 50 km/h zone. He was going 120 km/h. He could be charged with Reckless Endangerment, and Reckless Driving, because 3 people got hurt when his car was hit because of excessive speed and when the person from WA state hit his car. So both drivers are at fault really. I think it should be mandatory period to have insurance and collision coverage. My friend's car is totaled. A write off from ICBC. |

I think at the very least, we should be consistent. Why are there thousands of people who die because they don't have health insurance and can't afford treatment, but you are required to have car insurance in most states. Seems a bit silly. |

No, because no other type of insurance is mandatory. There are people who act like lunatics everyday and who are not in cars and if they hurt you, they can't use there medical insurance to pay your hospital bill. So why should cars be any different? |

Wow, are you serious? I've never heard of something that ludicrous (except 9/11 conspiracy theories) in my life. Of course it should be mandatory... |

Thats not right!

I don't know about you kids, but I fought in a war for our freedom and as an adult I should have the right to choose if I want to pay a big corporation alot of money for virtually no reason. |
