Do you think driving a car is a privilege or your right?

when you think of all the other innocent human beings driving around on our roads i think driving is a privilege that needs to be earned, not a right to be taken for granted :o)

When you fail a test you dont get the license to drive.

When you pass the test you do so its a privilege.

Buying a car is a right. Being licensed to drive it on public roads is a privilege.

It is a privilege. There are other means of transportation available. If it was a right, then why would people get tickets or teenagers get their vehicles taken away when they do something wrong? In order to drive you have to follow rules, so it is a privilege.

I am of the firm belief that it is a privledge, one that far too many people take for granted.

It has also, unfortunately, turned into a requirement in some places. In Sacramento a few years ago, I was turned down for a job at McDonalds because I did not have a car. I only lived a few blocks from the store so it was not a lack of reliable transportation to get to work, it was because they wanted to be able to send me to their other locations if business was slow at that store and the others needed assistance. I find that to be ridiculous, but it was still true...

It's a privilige, just like an operator's licence for an airplane or for any substantial watercraft. But there are also rights involved.

Think about eating breakfast at Waffle House. It's a privilige in that you may do so if and only if you have (1) money to pay for it, and (2) shirt & shoes to wear inside. However Waffle House can't deny you your privilige on arbitrary or whimsical grounds ("We don't serve motorcyclists"). Waffle House also can't deny you your privilige based on grounds that are illegal, like your age, religion, nation of origin, color, etc.

I hope that kind of explains how it is a privilige, but people's rights have to respected in granting or refusing the privilige.
