Do you think it's right to ban smoking in restaurants?
|
Personally I like to go to restaurants without being exposed to smoke, bars are something different in my opinion. Furthermore, it's not a infringement on rights because no one is saying stop smoking. We are saying that we don't want t be exposed to the worst type of smoke.

No, it IS an infringement. You are confused on WHO'S rights are being infringed though. Fair enough that a smoker could still go outside if they "needed" their smoke. So I don't think their rights are really that in question, even though I think it is wrong for them. On the other hand if they allow a variance for places that have an enclosed smoking area then I don't think it matters. OK so who's rights are being infringed is probably your question. Simple. The OWNER'S RIGHTS. If I own and run a business then who is the Govt to tell me what I can and can't allow BASED ON MORAL CODES. This isn't a sacrificing people place or something that there is every reason to say it is illegal. Now you as a customer can influence me. You could stop going to my establishment. You could tell your friends not to go to my establishment. If enough people stop going then I would be forced to stop allowing smoking. |

No, it's not right.
It would be right if they banned drinking alcohol as well, but they haven't.
If they were concerned about Americans' health, fast food would be illegal and 40 million Americans wouldn't be uninsured. All they care about are the lobbyists in DC. |

it's funny how people get all bent out of shape about a smoker - but think nothing about driving a car - which pumps more toxic waste into the air in one day than a smoker does all year |

It should be the choice of the owner |

No it is not correct. It is terrible that we are consttantly told what we can and can't do. While I personally do not smoke, it never bothered me to go any restaurant where there was a smoking section or non-section. |

It should be up to the owners of the establishment. I hate when they ban smoking from bars. Kids aren't allowed in there anyway, alcohol can do just as much damage to a body as smoking, and people are adults. They can choose to go somewhere else if they don't like it. Smoking is legal, why it is treated otherwise is crazy. Ok, yes, its unhealthy.... but the person who is smoking CHOSE to smoke. Those around them don't like it? Leave. Bars are loosing business because of it. Many have added outdoor areas so people can, but even still, people complain.
As far as other establishments, there should be a smoking area. Some places have separate ventilation systems just for this. I don't agree with smoking at the movies (they used to do this when I was a kid), or smoking around the mall, or in museums or other wide open public places, but I think there should be an area. Instead, you see grown adults sneaking around like they are smoking crack when its perfectly legal for them to purchase and smoke.
Ok, the smell of smoke is offensive to some. I can understand that. But the ones who say "what about the children?"... well, your screaming children are offensive to me. I know, that's not nice to say, but I would rather smell smoke then listen to it. And please, keep your kids out of the bar. Shouldn't you be more worried about where they are then what other people are doing? |

I think it should be banned everywhere, but I also believe if you own a place and you want people to smoke there then it should be allowed. We have the choice not to go there. |

Not outright, but I do believe that it should be an option at an extra expense to the owner.
If it's paid, smokers can frequent the smoking establishment. If they choose not to, the non-smokers can go there. Either one is free to choose to enter the other if they respect the decision made by the owner.
I appreciate non-smoking venues, but I do believe choice should be involved. |

No, they should have seperate ares for smokers like they use to. |

YES. for waitresses, smokers, and non smokers. I smoke and I am a waitress, but just because I smoke it doesn't mean I want it wafting around me and breathe it in constantly. Please, I smoke like 3 a day!
Less and less of the world smokes every day. Its becoming a majority issue--its not really normative to smoke in certain places anymore...even in public you get the evil eye. |

Absolutely. If people want to smoke in their own homes it's fine - but the UK smoking ban in restaurants and pubs was, in my opinion a great move. Now on a Saturday morning I don' have a sore throat, cough and stinky clothes. I don't even know how people can afford to smoke and it makes me cross when I see pregnant women, or women with small children smoking! (Rant over.) |

yes! even when they had the "no smoking" section, the smoke doesn't stay there. plus it's not fair to the employees. sure, they can a job someplace else but smoking is a health hazard for everyone that is choosing not to smoke.
I literally can't breathe when there is smoke. |

I think that it is fine to ban smoking in any public area since smoke has been linked to cancer. It's kind of a no brainer. |

Cigarettes stink and they make your hair and clothes stink, even if you don't smoke.
I think it is perfectly ok to ban smoking in restaurants. Why should I or my child have to suffer? |

Yes it is absolutely right to ban smoking.
People who have lung diseases and small children should not be forced to tolerate someone else's bad habit.
Nor should anybody else for that matter.
Smoking is an option
Breathing is not |
