Growing pot to use for thier own medicinal purposes?
Personaly, I support decriminalization of all marijuana offenses.
But for all you anti-pot people, what do you think of this? Additional Details Let me clarify.....Do you think it is ETHICAL to arrest them, not legal.

While I am in favor of de-criminalization, I am also against breaking the law.
In a democracy such as ours, the answer to problems like these is not to violate the law, or turn a blind eye to law-breakers, but to engage in the political process to get the laws changed.
As an officer, personal use growers are of course a low priority. It would be a foolish waste or law enforcement resources to actively seek out and persecute such offenders. However, when they are dicovered, I would arrest them and let the courts decide where to go from there. |

I understand what you are saying but I think it goes beyond ethics. Let see, to legalize, hmm.... the should provide a license so that those who are in need may grow it (I don't know). Let's just stick to the ethics... how would you really know if they are using it for their own medicinal purposes. Even if they were I believe they could abuse it. Because it is still illegal then why wouldn't they use it for medicinal purposes and make profit off of it? It could be a use and abuse type ordeal. |

Ethical, yes. A person is supposed to be regulated in the amount they get if it is being used as medication.
It's like having prescription drugs that weren't prescribed to you, if you were prescribed 10 and have 20, the extra 10 are illegal. |

I have a friend that is registered in our State and has to carry this certificate on his person at all times that he is allowed to have pot in his possession. He has a spinal cord injury and is allowed by the State to grow his own, purchase from an authorized dealer that is also registered by the State to sell. The bad part is the State says you can do all these things, but the Federal Law says you can't. Federal Law over rides State law. Kind of a double edge sword. The State says yes, but the Feds say no, you're going to jail. In answer to your question, the way the law reads, you should be able to grow your own strictly for medical purposes if you are licensed by the State to do so. |

Ethics don't enter into it for arresting or NOT arresting someone; as soon as you start asking if it's OK to let this person get away with this or that where would it stop... Then you'd have someone who stole food/medicine because they couldn't afford it... I'm in favor for medicinal pot for LEGITIMATE medical purposes as well; but even medicinal pot is a touchy subject depending on what state you're in... Personally, I suffer from chronic back pain due to an injury many years ago. So, on a DAILY basis I take Oxycontin, Vicodin & muscle relaxers just to FUNCTION and get thru work; many days they don't even take the edge off the pain I have to deal with... So, I can sympathize with those who have a need because of Cancer, Glaucoma, etc... I could see a prosecutor being a bit lenient with 1st offenders; but if they're not careful you'll have someone growing for personal use who comes across someone else who may nor be able to grow their own; for whatever reason, that decides to help them & guess what that GROWER just became a DEALER.... |

Neither cancer nor aids is immediately terminal. You'd have to have a much more specific claim to medicinal pot then those diagnoses, even here in California.
If they are breaking the law, or a cop has reasonable cause to suspect they are, of course it is ethical to arrest them. The courts will sort it out because that is what the courts are for. and arrests are how the courts get the cases in the first place.
Under what system of ethics would it NOT be responsible to arrest if there is probable cause?
BTW - I am hardly "anti-pot", only addressing your specific question.

If they really do have cancer or AIDS then it is used for a medicinal purpose...so it should be legal, right? Then it is also ethical....
I don't like pot, but a family member of mine helped a friend by getting them pot because they had a severe medical condition and couldn't eat. They were able to have an appetite after using marijuana. |

The most important question- is pot legal in their state?
If it's not, then yes. Arrest them.
If it is- is it in a safe(ish) location away from minors and people who do not need it medically? If a minor can get to it, they should be penalized. |

Until it is regulated, then the question is moot.I agree with a previous poster who stated the grower may intentionally whether out of malice or good will distribute their own product at will.Would you trust any marijuana on the market, without knowing the source. If you allow it to be used then it will be abused.
to think otherwise is naive. |

No, it's not ethical or legal (most state laws say no, but federal law trumps state law). Just let them go and stop harassing the sick. F*** the laws and let them live their lives. My opinion!! |

I support throwing abortion doctors, nurses and patients under a train...but that don't make it legal. Until it is legalized...IT'S ILLEGAL AND YOU SHOULD BE ARRESTED! |

Well, justice is not fair. Although, If that person has cancer or aids, then they should be getting medical care, not getting arrested. You have a point, but like I said Justice can't be served for everyone, and I feel bad for whoever has cancer/aids and is getting arrested. |

I know big Pharma and Alcohol push the anti weed agenda through their say no to drugs etc. programs headed in DC as it is simple business-eliminate any competition you can.
The laws around it are direct results of the interest of big business- States are mandated to enforce it but for the true-need patient -be real guys-leave them alone if it is only for personal use and they are staying home possibly confined to bed. Tequila or Beer just won't cut it.
It will change one day when smarter people are in charge and it will finally prove to be a very useful tool-also for its durable fibers and rich oils. |

Ethically, I think the laws should make exemptions for medicinal purposes. |

No it's wrong to arrest them. But can they even arrest them in states where mary jane has been decriminalized for medicinal use? It should be legal. It's a plant! It's an extremely effective medicine. Hopefully it will be completly legal someday! |

But of course, the pharmaceutical companies don't like the competition. Cheap, easy to grow medication to relieve pain and the psychological trauma of having a terrible physical condition . . . somebody has to be able to make a buck off those sick folks, and if you want to throw in the folks from the legal profession that's just a few more making a profit from a little pot. |
