I'm atheist so it feels hypocritical and weird saying it although i do sometimes out of habit from when i was a kid. i must admit due my own personal belief which i never inflict on anybody else might i add, saying "God bless you" feels pointless and I hate to think I'm passing on false hope (however those are just my own beliefs if you think different you are probably right my friend! ;)). My mother is very religious and I know it makes her feel better to hear it so i say it to her sometimes. I abstain from saying it to people whom i know aren't christian on purpose as i'm afraid it's not part of their culture... is it?
Bottom line is, i don't want to offend anyone but I like to do and say what feels right to me also, i want to be genuine when i say things for eg when i say please and thank you it's genuine. i would happily run to get anyone a tissue or medication or a doctor, anything they needed within reason so i don't think my beliefs make me a bad or unpleasant person. everybody's different and we must accept that. :)
those are my 2cents if they're any use!
edit: i just read the previous post and they refered to saying "bless you".... those two words alone sit well with me as they're so vague (to me anyways) and i'd be alright with saying that to people who sneeze from now on! |

It's part of our cultural. Just like "thank you" and "your welcome" is.

I tend to think it's rude to sneeze in front of me, I choose to let it go by not acknowledging the nastiness that just occurred so I don't need to say anything. |

It's just good manners to say something. But just avoid saying gesundheit because those people deserve to be hit by a anvil for their inept attempt at sounding cultured. You don't speak German so don't say it, just say "bless you" otherwise you're leaving yourself open to a punch in the face. |
