i am doing a essay in my history class, and this guy machiavelli i think thats how you spell it wrote a book called the prince, and he believes that morals should be seperated from politics and i was wondering what your thoughts on the subject were, and please explain your reasoning throughly. telling yes you agree or no you disagree.

No, they should not be separate. Morals and ethics are important qualities in elected officials. The problem comes when elected people want to legislate morality. As long as they're not breaking the law, people need to decide their morality and ethics for themselves. |

Yes, there should be a separation between morals and politics.
As the previous answers said laws are based on moral principles, that does not mean that every moral principle should have the weight of law! |

It is not the business of the law to make people moral, upright, or righteous. That is an individual responsibility which is only obtained through their faculties combined with the proper use of law.
The law is the organization of the natural right of lawful defense based on the individual right to protect life, liberty, and property. When you start using the law to shape morality, you start perverting the law by becoming a socialist planner and molding mankind through legislation. It is an attack on individual liberty since you are imposing someone else's version of morality upon a group of people.
State imposed morality is a form of collectivization of ethics because it removes from the individual the responsibility of making his or her own moral decisions. |
