polygamy
NOUN: 1. The condition or practice of having more than one spouse at one time. Also called plural marriage .
This would apply to both multi wives and multi husbands. Additional Details yoss...your statement reminded me of an African quote..."It takes a village to raise a child"

wow! so many yes! i guess in society and culture section many who blast 4 marrage system in islam are just jealous christians!
even not all muslims have more than one wife.
any way, from a country where it was allowed till some 60 years back, i can tell it only deteriorates families. it continuous peacefully when one of the wife has low self esteem or have no where else to go she compromises as atleast she has a roof over her head. when it comes to inheritence the situationm is worse.
ever heard of sati system in india? it was mostly in bengal. you know why ? in bengal hindu law of inheritance daybhag was applied. that meant the widow had a full right of her husbands property even if she had no child. in rest of india widow without child just had life interest in property. polygamy was rampant. so the result was youger wives were often forced to die on funeral pyre along with their husbands. you have no idea the downfall and problems such systems cause in society.
if you read history of mugals you will find how many brothers cut each others throats because every queen and her chldren claimed the throne as their right.
other than that when some of partners will be emtionally and otherwise deprived of marital needs they are going to cause problems in families.
your family system is already falling apart. are you looking for a last nail? |

Without a doubt yes.
Think about it. Currently a man can have as many illegitimate children as he wants, but if he wants to marry their mothers and take care of them all as a family we will throw him in jail. Now how does that make any sense?
We need to encourage men to be fathers and husbands, not punish them for doing the right thing.
God Bless,

Sure as long as it applies to both genders and everyone involved consents. I don't think the aquisition of a second spouse should be a unilateral decision though - he/she is marrying the existing couple (or trio, quartet, whatever), not just one member of it. But again, if everyone consents I see no problem with it.
Also, the first ammendment guarantees the right to freedom of religion. Given that some religions recognize polygamy it ought to be legal in order to uphold the first ammendment. And to say that only people of a certain religion can have a polygamous marriage amounts to discrimination based on religion which, among other things, tramples on our first amendment right to freedom of religion.
lashako76: Although the US does have a Christian majority we are not "a Christian country." The first ammendment guarantees freedom of religion, and so we cannot ban something simply because it is against one religion. And, incidentally, polygamy was quite common in at least the old testiment (not sure about the new one, haven't gotten there yet...). |

I wouldn't mind another husband, but then my current one would get too jealous.
It's hard enough keeping up with one person, his/her needs, happiness, and well being. I think having more than one would be selfish and greedy.
the more the merrier? I think not. Seriously, are we not civilized? |

I don't see why not, what does it hurt to have multiple spouses at same time |

I think people should just hang out with who they like without all the legal paperwork. |

In general, I'm of the belief that everyone should be allowed to do what they want if it doesn't hurt anyone. Therefore, my initial response to this question is yes.
However, just to play devil's advocate, there are administrative issues that would arise with multiple spouses. Think about tax filing, health/life insurance coverage, death benefits, etc.
So while I think it's a great idea in theory for those that are interested, I feel it merits some serious thought with respect to legal issues. |

no i think its wrong and weird, very cult-like cults are creepy as is sharing a husband with a bunch of other chicks dont u get jealous?wouldnt u worry if the others are better in bed? what if the other wives are just more attractive and ure shared husband prefers her better and also think of the children the poor children going to school with polygamist parents thats just weird do u want the children to grow up being teased and tormented for there whole lives? |

I got a friend of mine pregnant after a couple of bottles of wine. Four months later I met my wife to be. My friend was not in good economic shape and was living with me(roomates only). When my son was born we all shared a place for about a year until my sons mum could get on her feet. I felt like I had two wives, they kept me crazy busy.
Too busy. One is good.
With that said. I think it should be legal. But I do not agree with how some polygamus communities have the practice of marrying child brides. If a group of adults want to have that kind of union, all the power to them.
I think all adults in that situation should all have legal responsibility to provide for any child of that union like any other marriage. |

Have you seen braveheart? Marriage as we know it, a common man married to a common woman, is very new. This would be a step back, were a strong man could dominate the gene pool, and the lives of many. |

No, I am not for 'legalization' and all the trappings that go with it.
I am got against Plural Marriage. I am FOR IT being 'decriminalized' and plural relationships given the same 'protection' as any relationship between consenting adults as was decided by the Surpeme Court.
Most "polygs" I know, do not get marriage licenses, and don't want them. They don't believe that "plural marriage" or any marriage is something that the Government should dictate, because marriage to them is a religous covenant. To Government, its a 'legal contract'. I too, don't really believe that the Government should be in the 'marriage biz'.
But anyway... several States have laws that attempt to prevent or punish "plural relationships". These States are only concerned when the relationships are 'committed' (like a marriage is), and don't care if people sleep around inside or outside of marriages, and have children while doing so... so long as it does not appear to be a 'group commitment' or marrige-like group relationship. Only THEN do these States attempt to applied these 'non-cohabitation laws'. These laws attempt to make polygamist 'criminals'.
Now we are not talking about Bigamy, which is when a person acquires more than one marriage license with more than one living person at one time (The laws regarding Bigamy were primarily instatuted to protect people against those who might faudulently marrying more than one person covertly).
Therefore I would like to see a definitive assertion in U.S. law to protect personal relationships between consenting adults (or group of adults), INCLUDING those which have "the appearence of marriage" or are 'committed'. And therefore, "decrimimalizing" polylgamy.
Respectfully Submitted.... |
