Do you think the Government should introduce Compulsary Organ Donation?

There was talk a while back that the Government were going to introduce an Opt Out System, whereby, upon your death, your organs will be given for transplantation, unless you opt out while you are alive.

How is the decision to enforce drivers to wear seatbelts Disastrous?
Are you quite happy for people to be killed unneccesarily?

I think this is a wonderful idea. When someone dies the last thing relatives want to be thinking about are donating the deceased's organs. I did not get on well with my father, and it did not upset me when he died; but I was upset by my mothers distress, and did not want to cause her more anguish by asking if it was okay to give dad's organs for transplanting.

I agree to automatic organ transplanting, but it should be made very easy for anyone wanting to opt out. A person wishing to opt out should not be made to go somewhere, the government should ensure a letter gets to every person, (and given to all 16+ school children) with a reply paid card to send back. Then people opting out should have something like a credit card (small piece of plastic) that states they are opting out.

I think that Organ Donation is personal choice. I carry a Donor Card and have since I was 18.

I think that at the age of 18 each person should be sent a Donor Registration Form. I think this is a sensible age for people to understand organ donation and know whether they would want their organs to be donated or not.

It should be a legal requirement for this form to be filled in and then put on the Organ Donation Register. If you feel that strongly about organ donation you would have no objections in filling and returing the form immediately. If the form is not returned then obviously those people do not want to donate.

Obviously if you want to make the choice before you are 18 this should also be allowed, if not next of kin should make the decision.

I think it is an excellent idea. When someone dies, you're far too emotional to make rational decisions. It must be very hard having someone come up and ask your for your loved ones cornea, etc.
If they just did it, it wouldn't really bother you, because you would never know.

NO, NO, and NO! It is a violation. If people want to donate their organs, that's fine, but it shouldn't be mandatory, even with the opt out clause. TOO MUCH GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION.

Columbo
yes they should, if people feel strongly about it they can opt out cant they

If your Government wants more organ donors it should reverse its disastrous decision to make it compulsory for drivers and passengers in cars, and other such vehicles, to wear seat belts.

Remove them immediately and take your ill thought question to the religious organisation of your choice.

No it should not be compulsory and it should be opt in.

no - because you just dont know where it will end. much better to keep pushing donor cards, more publicity needed for those

It doesn't bother me, and - theoretically - it's a good idea. However, some people would be against truly compulsory organ donation for religious reasons and what-have-you.

The matter of organ donation always worries me a little. At the end of the day your body is your very last possession you have on this earth, and no matter what benefit the living may get from your spare parts, it should be your choice on an opt in basis and not the moral blackmail of an opt out.

I've got a Casio and a Hammond.
All the keys work apart from middle 'C' which sounds a bit flat, but I'm happy to donate either without the need for government legislation.
This proposed law discriminates against us organ owners against piano owners who will presumably not be caught and are free to keep theirs.
It's very unfair and amounts to keyboard discrimination.

When I first saw this, my immediate reaction was no. But an opt-out system? HMM, interesting. I would be willing to listen. But, this of course would require more government which means more taxes. So I am not sure, I am pretty much against anything that requires more tax money, until they can show they can be more responsible with what they got.
