No, the system gets it wrong too many times. If we make a mistake and kill someone as a result, how are we any better. Perhaps if the system never got the wrong person. |

Yes
Some people are just plain bad and they always will be, and if you lock them away in a prison some place then they will sure as the world hurt another person some how some way.
So I say dispatch them rather than feed and house them for the rest of their life. |

no, not at all...there have been too many miscarriages of justice...we don't want to hang the wrong person - and I wouldn't like to live in a country that thinks it's o.k. to murder people. |

Angela Cannings: - convicted of killing her two young children on the evidence of a "expert" released on appeal as the experts wasnt that much of an expert and it was in fact sudden infant death syndrome (hundreds of other parents had been convicted of offences against children on the evidence of this expert)
Barry George - convicted of killing Jill Dando - released on appeal
Birmingham 6/Guilford 4 (IRA Bombings) released on appeal as evidence was fabricated by the police who were under pressure to capture the culprits.
Some or all of those will have faced the death penalty. In the last 3 years of the death penalty in England and Wales there was one pardon and 3 exoneration's (more than 5%).
I do believe that life means life and convicted murderers should not be released except on successful appeal.
I know that means that some of the most vile people stay alive (in prison) - however to me that is better than one innocent being killed.
That is why I will always oppose the death penalty |

yes bring it back
for paedophiles
anyone who kills a child through violence or neglect.
those two boys who killed jamie bulger are now going to be released given a new id and life in australia having not served the full sentence.
yes they were kids when they did it but i would make them wait till they were 18 then get the death penalty.
anyone who gets in a car whilst drunk or on drugs and kills a person through bad driving.
all these kids that are stabbing each other etc i would again lock them up till 18 then get the death penalty.
any premeditated or child murder should get the death penalty.

If it can be proven beyond any doubt, maybe, but many innocent people sat on death row for years, some were executed and exonerated after death and some have been freed, how many more have died that we don't know about. people who commit especially brutal crimes and we Know through DNA and other evidence they did it, don't deserve to live, but maybe solitary life with out parole might be worse punishment |

Yep without a doubt, corporal punishment to, floggings etc, for anti social behaviour etc! |

The last man to be hanged in Britain got a posthumous pardon.
He was innocent.
So that's alright then. |

No there are far too many miscarriages of justice for it to be safe |

yes, I think a lot the victims might be alive now if the deterrent was the death sentence. Most of the potential murderers would think twice before murdering people if they thought they would lose their own lives as a result |

Murderers should be killed. That's my stance. But I would take it a step further and make it open to the public, that would send a stronger message. |

I didn't know it was taken away but yes i think a Pedophile, necrophiliac, murderer should be killed but only if he does all three |

I think that people in the UK who are asking about this should look at the death penalty system in action, in the US. Our countries are somewhat similar although rates of violent crime are significantly higher in the US.
Many Americans are realizing that the only purpose it serves is retribution or revenge, it is seriously (and intrinsically) flawed in application and that there is a serious and continuing risk of executing innocent people. And, it costs much more than life in prison.
130 people on death rows have been released with proof that they were wrongfully convicted. DNA, available in less than 10% of all homicides, can’t guarantee we won’t execute innocent people. If someone is convicted and later found innocent you can release him from prison, but not from the grave.
The death penalty doesn't prevent others from committing murder. No reliable study shows the death penalty deters others. Homicide rates are higher in states and regions that have it than in those that don’t.
Life without parole, on the books in 48 states, also prevents reoffending. It means what it says, and spending 23 of 24 hours a day locked in a tiny cell is not a picnic. Life without parole costs less than the death penalty.
The death penalty is much more expensive than life in prison, mostly because of the upfront costs of legal process which is supposed to prevent executions of innocent people. (upfront=before and during the initial trial)
The death penalty isn't reserved for the worst crimes, but for defendants with the worst lawyers. It doesn't apply to people with money. When is the last time a wealthy person was on death row, let alone executed?
Families of murder victims are not unanimous about the death penalty. However, even families who have supported the death penalty in principal have testified that the drawn-out death penalty process is painful for them and that life without parole is an appropriate alternative.
Problems with speeding up the process. Over 50 of the innocent people released from death row had already served over a decade. Speed up the process and we will execute innocent people.

No. Killing people is wrong. Put them in prison for life (meaning LIFE) and they die anyway. |

Yes, but that will never happen under a Democratic president, Democratic Congress with more Democrats in the Supreme Court Justice Department. |

I think that capital punishment should be legalized in canada because of the crime rate and if there is capital punishment in canada, people will take it seriously. And then the crime rate will be brought down, meaning that less people will die to sumplifly it. For example, if we kill people for the wrongfully commiting a crime and they have a family that they've left behind. If this is the case then why commit a violent crime before doing the crime? and why didnt they think about their family before?. |
