I quit tipping when I am the only one in a restraunt and I had to wait 10 minutes just to give what I want to eat and drink (especially when I say I'm ready to order).
Here's the deal waitstaff get hired for X they agree to that wage. They can find a different job if they don't like the pay nothing is forcing someone to take the job.
I think if I pay $12 dollars for a steak supper that's what it should be. Not another three or four bucks for someone to do their job. Three bucks an hr to fill a glass and bring me my food is a fair wage, it's not like they are getting shot at or have to run into burning buildings. How many times have people tipped a fireman for putting out a fire? Not many.
The only way I tip is if the waitstaff keep my glass full, go out of the way to make everything is out quickly. Now if they do their level best to get my food out and keep my glass full and the food is a little wrong they will still get a tip, but if they don't go over and above a $3 per hr job forget a tip. Is it cheap? No. I think it's a little derrogatory to tip because it is almost like throwing scraps to a servant. There again I don't think a twelve dollar meal should cost me twenty bucks if it was worth twenty bucks that is what should be the price of the menu. The waitstaff don't earn a paycheck from me I don't pay social security for them, the restraunt does. |

Just remember servers only make $2.00 ah hour. We are taxed on the amount of food we sell. If you leave me nothing it cost me money to wait on you. If the server was rude and did nothing to help the situation then it is an option, but if they did try to fix the problem leave them something. In response to 45 peacemaker(answer below) If restaurants had to pay their servers a decent wage your $12 steak dinner would cost a lot more. As your say here is the deal, when you go in a restaurant you accept that a tip is part of the price of the meal. If you do not want to tip go to McDonald's and enjoy your $6 cheeseburger. I don't mean to rant but people like that piss me off. |

Yes, it is not the servers fault. You might tell server that you were unhappy with the food, you might the a discount off your bill or even the the whole thing paid. |

If the kitchen messes up your order, you still tip the waiter/waitress. It's not his/her fault. If it's something the server did or didn't do that displeased you, you're not obligated to tip. However, remember this: for the most part, waiters/waitresses make most of their money off tips. Please think carefully before refusing to tip. |

Yes, if it's not the servers fault, you should tip your server. Complain to the manager, and you may get a complimentary meal.... |

As imstillsandy said, it depends on the situation and how the server handles the situation. If you did not say anything to your server regarding the food mess up, the length it took to get yoru food or your order taken then it is kind of hard to not tip as you did not give the server a chance to rectify the situation. If you did notify the server and they did everything they could to make the rest of your meal as pleasant as they could (under their control) then you should still tip the customery 15% (by the way, many years ago it was customery to tip 10%, whose high power and authority ruled it to be 15%? Was it raise by one of the "they" situations as in they raised the customery tipping?). If the server did not do anythging to try an rectify the problem then in my opinion you should still tip but I, myself would not tip the customery 15% But the choice is yours.
Now if you got a server like my family got onces then I'd be very inclined to not tip at all. My mother got a baked potato that tasted like it had been sitting their for 2 days. She called our server to the table and explained that the baked potato tasted very old, dry and rubbery and rquested another potato. Our server proceeded to argue with my mother that she didn't know what she was talking about, walked away and then stood in the corner with some of the other servers pointing at our table and making faces at us. Let's just say that she didn't get much of a tip and we never went back, plus we also verbally complained to the management and wrote a formal letter. |

I leave some tip for the service if the server did his/her best, but not nearly as much as I would if I was satisfied. |

It just depends upon how the server handles the situation. If the server is apologetic and does everything that can be done to try to help solve the situation, then the server deserves a tip for giving exemplary service. However, if the server doesn't do anything or just minimally tries to assist, then there would be no tip. |

If the serverer is kind about it and lets me know it wasn't their fault I'll understand but if they dont care I wont care and not leave a tip. |

Yes, as long as the waitress took care of the problem and took care of you. They always get the shi**y end of the stick for the cook's mistakes. |

tipping is for the service received.
If there is a problem with the food, contact your server and/or manager |

Do you all know that servers make $2.13 an hour? YES!! TIP YOUR SERVER!! She is not the one who cooks your food. All she does is bring it to you. It's not her fault... and for everyone who said not to tip - I wait tables to pay for my college expenses. Don't think we don't remember who you are. Enjoy your next meal. |

I was listening to a conversation today and I was told that you should tip 8% even for the worst service, because that 8% will pay for your servers taxes. Nothing else. The serves get paid so little and they still get taxes out of it. |

Yes it is not the servers fault that the food is messed up it is the cooks fault |

It's not against the law to fail to tip someone, but if it's not the servers fault, then what would the point be in not tipping them. |
