Does Apple have copyright to the 'i' in front of all its products?

A lot of products that Apple makes have the 'i' prefix in the front. Eg. iPhone, iMac, iPod, iTouch...
it's like their trademark - and identifies the fact that the product is made by Apple.
My question is... is this a legal trademark? Can they actually copyright the act of putting an 'i' in front of a word and making it a title or can any other company name their product with an i prefix?
For example, if I had a product, could I market it as iProduct to try to make it look like the product was by Apple.
Someone with a copyright law background would be helpful when answering this question.

ok : so why doesn't some company just copyright as many products as they can using the 'i' prefix. Imagine what money Apple would've paid if someone had already copyrighted the iPhone before they did!

No, they do not have a trademark to the letter "i". But, they do have a trademark to words such as "iPhone", "iPod", "iTouch", and many others. There is even another company that makes products that work with iPods, and they call their line of products "iHome".
But, you could be in violation of their trademark if you market a product with a name that is similar to one of theirs. For example, if you create a product and call "iFone", this could be a problem since it is soo close to "iPhone". |

if they can prove it in court that you stole their idea, yes, its wrong. but to think they have sort of copyright on the letter i infront of everything, no. they couldnt get that copyright. but if you came out with something like the iphone and it was similar to theirs. i dont they could do anything about it unless you stole some technology from them or called it the iphone. then again if they can prove anything in court, then thats that. |
