I've been attempting to sublease an apartment I will be getting in a few months, I posted it on a classifieds site and have had many responses. One person in particular is actually outside the US and asked if it was still available. Although I did not yet have the apartment, I said it was still available because I am still trying to sublease out 2 rooms.
From the second email, she asked for me to send the payment details, so I told her the price. The next email she asked for my full name and address.
Later on she told me that her father who is also out of the country has received the payment details and will be sending the check. I got the check yesterday, but it was for an amount greater than what I had told her it would cost.
I still do not know for sure if I will be getting the apartment, I submitted the application over a week ago but have yet to hear back from the apartment owners. Should I deposit the check to ensure it is valid? Should I hold on to it until I know for sure that I have an apartment for her?
I asked her to call me and sent her my phone number so we could discuss the signing of the subleaser form and talk about payment's and everything.
I'm in a tough situation because I want to be absolutely positive I get a sub leaser for the summer, and if this check is fake, I want to keep looking. I feel like I could just walk away with the check because we never actually made an agreement, morally I would not do such a thing, but how can someone be so stupid to send a check for a large amount of money without ever meeting them?
I'm at a loss of what I should do, please help!
