Convicted criminals should be shipped off to an island and have to fend for themselves. US laws are too soft. If they were harsher, there would not be as many criminals. |

i think the law is too soft on criminals with major offences, but too hard on minor ones, and the police are already fairly hard on criminals, if you've ever been in a jail cell, you will know what im talking about |

The laws are there to protect the guilty. Victims are abuse by the people who abused them and their protectors. Take away all the rights of criminals. Low lifes. |

Most definetly! My son (20 yrs. old and a father to a 2 1/2 yrs old daughter) was killed in an auto accident on Oct. 28, 2001. The man at fault for the accident was not charged, ticketed or anything else. Lab test at the hospital proved he had two (2) illegal drugs in his systems. I fought to have this man arrested and convicted for killing my son. FINALLY, on Oct. 27, 2005, he was sent to prison for 5 years, hardly enough to cover the death of my son. If I had not fought those 4 years, he would be running around still!! |

Not sure if you're talking UK or other but I refer to the UK legal system with this answer. Firstly, there are a couple of pieces of legislation that were introduced. Firstly, the Police and Criminal Evidence Act and secondly the Human Rights Act. They both (the human rights act more than PACe I think) cater for how the little darlings should be treated whilst in custody. The problem being is the UK's interpretation of the HRA. This is my opinion and that is that because of these pieces of legislation the emphasis is on how we treat these low lifes that commit crime. It seems to consider little the rights of the victims. Afterall, I wonder how much of the HRA they take into consideration when they commit crimes against others? With this in mind, I do not feel that it is the police that have got soft it is the introduction of new legislation protecting the criminal that has got soft. Police officers hands are tied with reams of red tape.
And thats not all. Again this is my opinion, you have most 'petty' criminals going through magistrates courts. I personally do not feel that magistrates are qualified or experienced enough to be harsh on those put before them. My experiences with them (and I'm not a crim by the way) is that they are far to soft on the criminals and need to take a far more robust approach in order for them to realise that they are not going to get away with there actions time and time again, getting off with fines and rehabilitation orders and community punishment orders etc etc. It's not good enough. Which leads me to my final point............
With the above comment on magistrates there should also be consideration given to direction given to them by government bodies. As has been well publicised in the media recently, prison spaces are currently at a premium. Therefore more criminals are getting let off of the threat of jail because the space is so precious. If this is the case and you were criminally minded would you not chance your arm with petty crime knowing you were not going to get the custodial sentence you so richly deserve? Also, it is becoming so much of a common theme that solicitors as part of their defence are saying that a custodial sentence will not benefit the suspect. What the hell? Who cares what benefits them. all we the public should care about is that they are not on our streets bringing misery to us or anybody else. Even if they do get a custodial sentence, prisons are no deterrent. I mean most have Playstations TV's, CD players etc in their rooms. They get the baccy for a smoke and drugs are becoming more available in side than on the street. They want for nothing.
The law is not soft because most legislation is there to protect the innocent. It is the HRA I blame for most of our problems combined with an archaic legal system.
hope I didn't bore anyone. |

DO I CARE?

Yeah, and they should bring back hanging and broadcast execution's live on T.V. -it would make people think twice about committing murders, and I'd rather watch that, then Big Brother. |

Yes it is. Trouble is,its not the Police that make the laws. its the Government that make the laws, the Police just enforce it. Even when prosecutions are bought, and it goes to court, half the Judges release the defendant with a slap on the wrist!!
Today, in Britain, we are on the brink of losing the war against crime. Our criminal justice system puts the rights of criminals before those of their victims. This Government lets thousands of convicted criminals out early so that they are free to commit new offences.
So much for Tony Blair's famous boast that he would be 'tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime'. Labour are soft on crime, and the results are plain for everyone to see.
This is what having a Prime Minister who is all spin and no delivery really amounts to. He has admitted as much himself. Last year 'TB' owned up to being 'perceived as soft' on crime and asked that he be 'personally associated' with 'eye-catching initiatives'.
People are tired of all the talk and all the photo opportunities. They want to know how this country is going to win the fight against crime. !!!!! |

ONLY if you include ALL criminals!
From murderers to rapists.
From fraudsters to confidencemen.
From double parkers to speeders!
From Jaywalkers to Flytippers.
A crime is a crime is a crime!
NO EXCEPTIONS! |

What is the point of the Police being hard when the courts let them off with CD's, CS or Community Service?
Motorists are an easier target with instant fixed penalties. |

Yes, it's gotten to the point that only the criminals have rights and the poor old working stiff has none. That may not be what the constitution says, but criminals have all the rights in court (lawyers, et al) and the victims of crime have none. When a criminal stabs someone and that victim must spend months or years in hospitals, does the victim get a free pass at the hospital? no. Does the criminal get one, if they stub their toe resisting arrest? yes.
Is it right? No. It is the result of liberal courts taking away from the law abiding and giving to the criminal. Why should my tax dollars pay for a criminal to have free medical care when someone that has NEVER broken the law, have to choose between eating and taking medications? |

Defo,
All there interested in is people speeding.
And in the last week alone i've had a police van speed up behind me, and saw one squad car overtake a normal person doing the speed limit, they thing there so bloody cool.
Only the other night i was racing this taxi driver and a squad car was waiting at the junction over the road to the left (hadn't noticed him yet).
I was indicating to turn right so i went into my lane, then this squad car who watched me fly down the road appeared from my left. Since i was stuck in my turn right lane the squad car drove up the hill i was going up.
Since the taxi was long gone, i drove up at 30, not expecting for my new buddy to be waiting round a blind corner, needless to say the squad car was disappointed!
Just have to say I never broke the speed limit where I can be prosecuted and Iām an advanced driver! |

I'm not sure about the police needing to be harder on criminals...
I live near Atlanta and here a 92 year old woman what shot to death when a team of undercover police went to her house to serve a NO KNOCK warrant.
The warrent was issued because of a lead from an informant.... The 92 year old woman did manage to shoot and injure some police officers when they entered her home without knocking... But sadly, she didn't live to tell about it. |

Yes I certainly do but its the judicial system put in place that lets it down. Capital punsishment should be brought back in for starters and repeat offenders should do a stretch in prison, although prison is not the answer i think they should be tougher on them.
As of what and how to treat them I dont know. |

Personally i think the legal system is in a bit of confusing, there are too many omissions to the legal system and too much discrimination. |

I don't think that the police are interested in catching criminals, the motorist is a far easier target, one to get a good "clean up" rate and two to raise finance.
If the courts and judges passed stricter sentences on criminals, the police might become more motivated to do something more productive. |
