night clubs are private clubs and can do whatever they want to make sure you are of age to enter. besides anyone can view your drivers licence. its public knowledge.

It's not actually "your" license. It belongs to the state, and everything on it is considered public information.

What they are doing is taking the info from your license, including your age and address. They are then able to sell that information to advertising companies.
This is legal in most places still.

Of course it's not illegal. That is how they make sure they are valid. If they weren't allowed to scan them then people could just throw a random magnetic strip looking thing on a fake ID and go right through.

Nah, it is not illegal (although it is a bit weird). On the other hand, licences (at least the SA ones) say that they are not meant to be used as proof as age (even though everyone does that anyways).

If they ask to scan it and you permit it, no — that's not illegal.

The only purpose they have to demand your identification is to verify your age. You can show them the license and tell them they're not allowed to scan it. However, as a private business, they can choose not to serve you for virtually any reason, including your refusal to permit a driver's license scan.

Provide a passport instead. It's an official document with a photo and proof of age, and they can't scan it.
