For those of you who have never
read The Patriot Act and believe it
is "Patriotic" because it has the word
"Patriot" in it....Please read just one
of the violations to the Constitution of
the United States against you!!

Why does this not bother you?????

Section 215
allows the FBI to order any person or entity to turn over "any tangible things," so long as the FBI "specif[ies]" that the order is "for an authorized investigation . . .
to protect against international terrorism or clandestine intelligence activities."
Section 215
vastly expands the FBI's power to spy on ordinary people living in the United States, including United States citizens and permanent residents.
The FBI need not show probable cause, nor even reasonable grounds to believe, that the person whose records it seeks is engaged in criminal activity.
The FBI need not have any suspicion that the subject of the investigation is a foreign power or agent of a foreign power.
The FBI can
investigate United States persons based in part on their exercise of First Amendment rights,
and it can investigate non-United States persons based solely on their exercise of First Amendment rights.

For example, the FBI could spy on a person because they don't like the books she reads,
or because they don't like the web sites she visits. They could spy on her because she wrote a letter to the editor that criticized government policy.

Those served with Section 215 orders are prohibited from disclosing the fact to anyone else. Those who are the subjects of the surveillance are never notified that their privacy has been compromised.

If the government had been keeping track of what books a person had been reading, or what web sites she had been visiting, the person would never know.
Is Section 215 Constitutional?

Normally, the government cannot effect a search without obtaining a warrant and showing probable cause to believe that the person has committed or will commit a crime.

Section 215 violates the Fourth Amendment by allowing the government to effect Fourth Amendment searches without a warrant and without showing probable cause.

The violation of the Fourth Amendment is made more egregious by the fact that Section 215 might be used to obtain information about the exercise of First Amendment rights.

For example, the FBI could invoke Section 215 to require a library to produce records showing who had borrowed a particular book or to produce records showing who had visited a particular web site.

Section 215 might also be used to obtain material that implicates privacy interests other than those protected by the First Amendment.
For example, the FBI could use Section 215 to obtain medical records.

The provision violates the First Amendment by prohibiting those served with Section 215 orders from disclosing that fact to others, even where there is no real need for secrecy.

The provision violates the First Amendment by effectively authorizing the FBI to investigate U.S. persons, including American citizens, based in part on their exercise of First Amendment activity, and by authorizing the FBI to investigate non-U.S. persons based solely on their exercise of First Amendment activity.
The provision violates the Fourth and Fifth Amendments by failing to require that those who are the subject of Section 215 orders be told that their privacy has been compromised.
Doesn't the government need these powers?

I don`t like that the Patriot Act gives absolute power to the government over the people`s oversight. I also don`t like changing anything for terrorist, why should we give up oversight for them? Screw them. When I tell my a-political Republican voting friends that the government can immunize you against your will they respond right-a-way, What?

It worries me. It should worry every American.

Many are not worried because they are uninformed about it, and they bought the government and media spin, and they buy the overblown war on error.

As you mention, people were deceived by its name. That is happening again now with the deceptively named "Violent Radicalization and Home-grown Terrorism Prevention Act". That one is not intended for terrorists - it is intended to suppress political dissent in America.

People see the word "terrorism" in the name and assume it doesn't affect them. When that one passes (it has already passed the House), the distinction between "dissent" and "terrorism" disappears. It also gives the FBI what it sought - the right to monitor all of our internet activity.

Wake up people.

To answer this in a civil manner - I have this sticker on my car back wind shield - One nation under surveillance !

It's not right? But what I think is more important that people have not gathered together and fought this. It's our own fault. We are all busy with our families and jobs and that is what they want, then we have less time to pay attention to what they are doing and why - and whom it benefits!

I am not a big fan of it it was made to be used against American citizens and foreigners and so far some 300,000 Americans have been arrested they are not all terrorist this act has definitely been abused.

there are worse acts out the. the violent radicalization and homegrown terrorism one for starters. a real good way to make an excuse to round up all dissenters when they declare martial law and turn us into a fascist state.

It should concern all U.S. citizens. You would be surprised how many get a false sense of security from it however.
See what I mean?

I had mine installed a few years ago. It seems to be working perfectly. It also has some features that are really cool like the built in BS detector. You would think if your conclusion had any validity we would be reading or watching all the horror stories about how the Patriot Act was misused and how the rights of some poor freedom loving American had been trampled by the evil empire created by this act. But I guess since you don’t hear much its irrelevant to most Americans, kind of like soccer scores and almost anything French. Maybe you have to believe that the only US Senator to vote against the Patriot Act, Russ Feingold, is some sort of enlightened profit…..that alone is all I need to know.

The Patriot Act is nothing to worry about. It is there to protect us. You are way off base.

nope
Do nothing, fear nothing.

Why should the patriot act worry any American.

It is basically the RICO laws applied to confront international terrorisim.

You obviously know nothing about the US Constitution.

If you did --you would have been more concerned with the 5-4 vote in the Supreme court trying to LIMIT GUN ownership in the USA. Luckily for Americans--The original intent of the Constitution WON OUT.

If not, legal gun ownership would be stripped from American citizens.--BY JUDICIAL RULE.

No, not a bit.
It has proven very valuable to our security.
We still have far more liberty and civil rights than any other country in the world including the Uk and Canada.

Sounds to me like you are a TERRORIST supporter......I AM an American and it does not worry me,,,,not having it would worry me more......It does not violate the Constitution as the Supreme Court has ruled....it calls for the monitoring of INTERNATIONAL CALLS to KNOWN affiliates of terrorist orgs....the international exchange of information with known terrorists is NOT protected in the Constitution...as far as a police state.....ANY country you live in, as you said you were no0t an American, I can assure you is more of a Police state than the US will EVER be....
