no - it says quite clearly thou shalt not bear false witness
however most of the old testament stories are about people who have told lies for one reason or another. jacob lied to isaac when he pretended to be Esau and stole his birthright. laban lied to Jacob about which daughter he was marrying. Joseph lied to his brothers when they came to Egypt looking for food. |

Well its doesnt say THOU SHALT NOT LIE, but it does say not to bear false witness, however in my humble opinion its immoral to be deceitful and whether the bible tell you that you may not lie or not is irrelevant. |

I don't think so, but I think that white lies are OK as long as your heart is in the right place. Depends how literally you want to take the book I guess but as a general guide for life the message it sends out is 'love', so... if your lie has a better purpose, to further love in the world, then I think God will say it's OK even if the Bible says don't do it. |

Colossians ch 3 v9 says ,Lie not to one another,seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds.v10.having put on the new man,which is renewed in knowlege after the image of him that created him.Proverbs ch19 v5,A false witness shall not be unpunished,and he that speaketh lies shall not escape. for those that does not believe in Jesus I am sorry for because in v3 it says ,The foolish man perverteth his way,and his heart fretteth against the lord.(A person that has not come to know the Lord does not understand , what a new man is .)I dont understand how a person cannot believe there is a God that created us but can beleve that we came into exsistents at the bottom of the sea by a piece of moss or the big boom theory,when we have history of Jesus Christ,the diciples,Pontias Pilot,and many others recorded in the Bible. |

The are theologians who have argued that ethics is 'situational', i.e. depends on the situation, rather than on black-and-white absolute imperatives. E.g. if you hid some resistance fighters in your attic and the Gestapo knocked and asked, 'Have you seen some airmen who have escaped?' Would you immediately say, 'Yes, they are in my attic'? Or would you say, 'No'? A less, but perhaps more common, situation would be when you are asked, 'Do I look fat/good/old/etc. in this?' Is it always right to tell the truth?
Anyway, the Bible is not supposed to be used like a book of rules of Dos and Don'ts. The Golden Rule, if there is one, is 'Do unto others what you want others to do unto you'. The God that Jesus came to reveal is not one who goes around ticking off our faults and waiting in the next world to throw the book at us. He is the God of love and forgiveness. Not a petty ogre, nor an indulgent old man in the sky. |

One of the Ten Commandments is "Thou shall not bare false witness against they neighbor", so NO, you should not lie.
But,,,
People see things relative to their own position, that's why we have Judges, and the Bible is a big advocate of Law and Judges. So does the Bible allow for lying? Yes. Does it condone it? No.
It also depends on how you define a "lie". Even Jesus told stories in example to get a particular point across. The stories where not necessarily true, so a purest might call that lying. |
