Does torturing someone really work?

Additional Details I guess I should have added, "Would it work to get honest answers out of a person"?

NO although people think it does, it just gets around the point. especially in Iraq. we got rid of sadam husein for torturing his country.. but what are we doing? Getting information from torture is awful, and there are other ways of getting people to talk.
There's something called intelligent thinking
read this article i know its really long but skim it it's really good and i think we should be doing this all the time. |

To a point...
It can be effective to place someone in duress to extract information
BUT
to quote a famous Tarantino movie "...if you torture him long enough he will tell you he wears women's underwear. That doesn't necessarily make it #### so!" |

depends entirely on what you are trying to accomplish.
If you are trying to accomplish a successful interrogation, then no. Over and over and over again it has been proven that torture brings about inconsistent and unreliable results.
If however you are attempting to scare people into submission, then I would say that the threat of it is very successful at that.
If you are trying to kill and destroy people, then torture may be the right call, as it often leads to death and the destruction of the psyche.
If you are trying to acmplish something good....then torture is not for you. If you want to create havoc, fear, resentment, and ultimately create a mutinous person full of hate and fear, then torture is very effective.
what were you trying to accomplish? |

It's been proven that you get worthless information from torture. They will say anything you want to hear even if it isn't true. |

It depends.
If you're torturing someone and asking "Did you do it?" then it's totally unreliable, because people will confess to anything to stop the torture.
If you're torturing someone and asking "Which bridge did you hide the bomb under?" then it's reliable because the person knows that if he lies, and the bomb isn't where he says it is, the torture will resume.
That is the sort of questioning that waterboarding has been used for in Iraq, as an example, what is called "immediate operational intelligence" - ie stuff about something that's happening RIGHT NOW, and can be stopped, and verified.

psychological tortures have proven much more effective than physical, but yes - torture can get you answers, especially if you're Jack Bauer.
The best tortures are actually waterboarding, chinese water torture, and, my personal favorite, f***king with their concept of time. Russians would keep people alone in a cell with no windows and one light bulb.
Morning: "good morning comrade, here is your breakfast:
evening: "good evening conrade, here is your dinner:
10 minutes later: "good morning comrade, here is your breakfast"
3 days later: "good evening comrade, here is your dinner:
12 hours later: "good evening comrade, here is your dinner"
Bloody Brilliant
I don't reccomend trying it on your friends, though, bc after you get the answer, they'll kill you in your sleep, which has a somewhat higher success rate than torture.
(Of course, all of this is dependant on your ability to verify the information, as people will first just lie to you. gotta be able to tell the difference somehow. If you can call them on it, they'll crack - even if you just bluff) |

It depends on the person. Although im not sure i beleive most soilders go through a training that helps them endure torture but your common person would probably succumb and tell you things. Not that i would reccomend torturing anyone. |
