Does water-boarding/torture have a place when interrogating a prisoner. Does it violate ur conscience?

9/11 Plotter Waterboarded 183 TimesReuters
posted: 9 HOURS 25 MINUTES AGOcomments: 2014filed under: Al Qaida News, National News, Political NewsPrintShareText SizeAAA(April 19) - WASHINGTON - CIA interrogators used the waterboarding technique on Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the admitted planner of the September 11 attacks, 183 times and 83 times on another al Qaeda suspect, The New York Times said on Sunday.

The Times said a 2005 Justice Department memorandum showed that Abu Zubaydah, the first prisoner questioned in the CIA's overseas detention program in August 2002, was waterboarded 83 times, although a former CIA officer had told news media he had been subjected to only 35 seconds underwater before talking.

President Barack Obama has banned the use of waterboarding, overturning a Bush administration policy that it did not constitute torture.

The Justice Department memo said the simulated drowning technique was used on Mohammed 183 times in March 2003. The Times said some copies of the memos appeared to have the number of waterboardings redacted while others did not.

The Senate Intelligence Committee is investigating the CIA interrogation program, which under President George W. Bush also included slamming prisoners into walls, shackling them in uncomfortable positions and depriving them of sleep.

Bush administration officials had claimed such methods were needed to get information but the repeated use of the waterboard on Zubaydah and Mohammed were sure to raise questions about its effectiveness.

If the purpose is to obtain information that could save lives, I would say yes,

If it was merely done to retaliate against the prisoner, then no.

Water boarding does not produce injury, although it can be very frightening for the subject.

Water boarding is part of the training for some members of the military.

I would say that we should not restrict our military that tightly.

We live in a dangerous world.

One day Muslim Terrorists will get their hands on nuclear weapons and will smuggle those weapons into the United States of America and various other countries.

If we have a prisoner who knows where the nuclear weapons are located what methods would you be willing to permit our military to use to find out where the nuclear weapons have been hidden?

Or would you say that we do not have the right to use those methods to find out where the Muslim Terrorists have hidden the nuclear weapons?

Should we just wait for The Muslim Terrorists to detonate the nuclear weapons and kill hundreds of thousands if not millions of Citizens of The United States of America or some other country that The Muslim Terrorists have chosen to target?

They say it didn't do any harm and they got alot of useful information that averted other attacks.

These people are not POW's. They are terrorists who have not signed any treaties or such things as the Geneva Conventions and do not deserve the protections that those guarantee. They are not uniformed combatants of any government on earth and deserve no protection under international law or the laws of the USA. In case you people do not understand they are sworn to exterminate you as infidels at the behest of radical Islam. Until they recant that stand they deserve no better treatment.

MadMan
The US has no place using this, or any other form of torture. It is illegal under US law, it is illegal under international treaties that the US sponsored, it is immoral and it does not work. We are better than this.

It is illegal and morally wrong. If we do this to POWs under interrogation, than we have to expect that other countries will do this to our soldiers too. As a country we need to lead by example, and this is setting a very bad example.

It still amazes me that George W. Bush served two full terms. How on earth is this constitutional?!?!
