Dog adoption policies and repossesion of the dog?

If I'm adopt a dog from a rescue that states I have to live in the area to adopt and says they do check ups on the dog for the lifetime of the dog and reserve the right to take the dog back at anytime they see fit... Is that legal? Can they take property back after you buy it? Also, could they stipulate that you cannot move from the area and still have the dog? IE - i live in california now, if I adopt the dog and move to new york, could they legally repossess my dog?

These policies are so that you don't go to a shelter that isn't close to where you reside just to obtain a rescue animal. as some shelters have pure breeds.
The rescue shelter wants the animal to go to a loving home that will keep the animal as it was a member of the family.

Dog adoption policies I am trying to adopt a dog that is not close to my neighborhood shelter. I found this dog profile on dog adoption web site. I put in an application and met the dog 3 days ago. The foster care person still need to do home check. If I ended up adopting this dog, can they take the dog back after 2 weeks trial period? I had a dog for 14 years and lost her to cancer 3 years ago. I can't imagine keeping a dog for 2 weeks and had to return her to someone else. Is there something that I can do if that happens? I heard stories about private adoption places that do these kind of tricks to dog lovers.
