First time offender needs help (shoplifting case)?

I am 18 years old and in February I was arrested for shoplifting a $22.00 bra rom Macy's. I have court on Thursday and I didn't hire a lawyer.
I don't know what to do. Somebody told me to plead as a first time offender but i don't know how this works. please give me advice.

Assuming you're in the US --
If you're unsure of what to do, say you're not guilty if you're required to enter any sort of plea. You can always change to "guilty" later on, but once you enter a guilty plea, you can't go back.
Don't enter a guilty plea, even if that's what you think you want to do, until you've talked it over with an attorney. You need to be aware of exactly what a guilty plea is and what it isn't.
The judge's job is to ensure that you're treated *fairly*. Not that every question is resolved in your favor, just that you get a fair shake. That means that he or she should be concerned that you have whatever counsel you need.
My advice -- try to find a lawyer. If you can't locate one by the court date, appear without a lawyer. Tell the judge you've tried to get a lawyer, but for whatever reason haven't been able to. If it's too expensive for you, the court will arrange for you to get legal representation free or at reduced rates. Point out that you've never been arrested before (if that's true), that you've made all appearances at court required of you (if that's true), that you're not running away from the situation, and ask for a "continuance" (postpone the proceeding) so that you can find an attorney. And if you've gotta enter a plea, say not guilty. |
