Gas Station SCAM? What would this cost? Can they make me pay?

Last week, I drove away with the gas nozzle still in my car at the gas station. I went inside, gave them my information and a copy of my vehicle registration and they said they would call me. I know other people who have done this same thing and the gas station people told them it was no problem and it was free. I think they are scamming me, because the station called me and said it would cost $150 to replace the breakaway thing that was broken.

I think they are scamming me but I can't be sure, and I really don't have the money to pay for it. There were no cameras at the gas station, what could they do with my information? Is there anything they could/would probably do? And are they scamming me? Is this a legitimate cause?

Sounds like a reasonable price to me. They have a legitimate claim since you damaged their property. Since they have your info,they can take you to small claims court if you do not pay.

You damaged their property. You owe them for the damage you caused.

They can sue you if you don't pay what you owe them.

I guess it really depends on whether it was a mom n' pop type station, or corporately owned. It does happen all the time, and chains always just have company maintenance guys reattach them.
