Is it possible to get a 2 year shoplifting ban lifted early? Possibly by providing some kind of service to the place stolen from? I ended up getting caught shoplifting and I feel worse about it than almost anything. I don't want to pull the pity card out here but I wasn't exactly stealing for the sake of stealing, but i actually needed something. I'm not trying to justify it either, as i knew then as i do now that it was wrong and that the guilt would overwhelm me even if i didn't get caught. But I still made that spontaneous decision. The LP's even realized this and were kind enough not to call the police, but I still feel like I owe something to myself and to them. I cant justify what i did but I would do anything to reverse it.
I don't know what exactly what service i could provide, maybe assisting their Loss Prevention section by helping catch other shoplifters. As I have seen many people who do and remember their faces.

I think that two years is probably the statute of limitations on a misdemeanor in your state. Bet they have a photo of you in their security office. Catch you again in that two years, and they have both shoplifting and trespassing charges. A case that's more worth their while, since first-time offenders get diversion programs for a single misdemeanor charge.
If you want to make it right with the store, send the owner a cashier's check for $200 - $300, the average cost of the time their employees spent bothering with you. :)
The best way to make this right, though, is to pay it forward. Go through all your clothes and donate anything you didn't wear last winter to a charity like Goodwill. Search "volunteer opportunities [name of your] county [your state]" and give a week's work to a soup kitchen, health clinic, etc. Just make sure you put some verb into that 'work': mop floors, wash dishes; and you really will feel better.
That, and don't do it again, right? ;) |

It wasn't taken to the police? If so this could be likely, but I wouldn't go about assiting them in Loss Prevention, I would go about a more direct hard work, something most people aren't just willing to do, i.e. janitorial duties including mopping, sweeping, bathrooms. or other odd jobs that aren't taken care of like they should be at the store.
But of course if this is a corporate store such as Wal-Mart I don't believe any management in the store actually has the authority to dismiss the shoplifting ban. |
