My view on this subject is one of the old times .............. I believe if you do a crime that it results in jail before the age of 18 ................ you have to do national service ......... so no more sitting about in a cell with your playstation and softly spoken guards. Let these kids know what it is like to have someone shouting and picking on them all the time, making them work for their bed and board.

You are right in what you say, and I couldn't agree with you more. The problem is poor Gordon has got himself in a political hole, and he cannot get out.
This New Labour Party came to power with the slogan "tough on crime and the causes of crime" They never achieved this, over the years they ignored, or rather altered the rules regarding the calculating crime rate, and put their resources into persecuting motorists. Now it's came back to haunt them, and although the government still won't admit it, the serious crime rate is going up.

Sadly we have come to the point where zero tolerance is the only option. It doesn't have to mean prison though. How about parading in handcuffs through the town centres that they terrorise during daylight? Humiliation is the only language they understand. Chain gangs are used in America - why can't we use them here? Dress them in pink flowery overalls and make them do meaningless work by the side of the road.
The punishments that are used in the UK are designed with the crims' human rights in mind. I don't care about their human rights, I just want to live in a safe society.

I'm with funny lad on this. Discipline needs bringing back. A zero tolerance is needed to regain the streets back from mindless thugs. It is also about time the goverment made their mind up once and for all at what age a person becomes an adult, at age 16 the are allowed to leave home and live anywhere, at 17 they can drive, at 18 they can vote and purchase cigs, you can claim child tax credit and child benefit until the day before they are 20 as long as they're in full time education and at 21 they can purchase alcohol in a supermarket yet drink in a pub at 18..

I couldn't agree more with you.
In this day and age everyone is getting away with every crime and it is awful, two men who brutally murdered my uncle in his own home got only 11 years for one of them and the other got not proven???
My eldest child has now just turned 11yrs and the world they are growing up in is scary, thankfully i am lucky and he does not hang around, drink or want to be in gangs, on the other hand tho he and his friends are bullied because they go to the Sea Cadets and these other children are known to carry knives, what if one of these bullying incidents becomes serious!!
However in Gordon Browns eyes they are under 16yrs so that means they will be okay to carry their knives or even threaten or harm my son or his friends with them.
Where is their deterent from knife carrying thats what I would like to know? No matter their age they know when they leave the house with a knife it can do harm so they should be able to be punished. Where are their parents that they do not know their children are going out with knives?

Regardless of the reasons why they carry knives, it should never be treated lightly - regardless of thier age. At the end of the day, the age of criminal responsibility is 10 in UK (8 in Scotland) so kids that age should have the mental capacity to know what is wrong - and be heavily punished if carrying/using knives. It wouldn't be the first time an under 16 has been found carrying or threatening or even using a knife.

The Government need to really stamp down on this big time - and quickly. For something as serious as this, anyone over the age of criminal responsibility should be very heavily punished.

And so he should for it about time these violent individuals are deprived of their liberty and housed in special penal intitutions that provide minimal care but severe pain over short periods of detention. Essentially we want them to feel that imprisonment is an awful place to spend time and they would not wish to have the punishment repeated.

I agree and it seems to me that by saying they will now prosecute 16 and 17 year old carrying knives, that will just encourage the younger kids who will know they can get away with it.

It is way past the time when we should reclaim the streets for law abiding citizens. The only answer is zero tolerance policing - if you commit a crime then you are arrested and charged-not let off with a caution. As for knives, they are an offensive weapon and anyone caught carrying one should be imprisoned, no matter what the excuse.

Every time I watch the news or read the paper all I see is how random thugs are going round beating people up and stabbing them for no reason and just because there kids they get away with it.
Well I will tell you I carry weapons on me at all times, I got pepper spray, knuckle dusters and an extendable metal bar, I carry these to protect myself from these scum. I have been doing so for 5 years now and i've not once ever used them but I feel safer carrying these on me as I won't allow myself to become a victim to these yobs. I am not one of these yobs either, im 26 and im just a normal person who goes about his life like everyone else. Knife crime is getting worse but I feel that the normal people should have the right to carry non lethal weapons to protect themselves as even if the culprits do get caught, there under age and the law is a joke when it comes to sentencing them.

As long as it is stupid kids who are mostly getting killed, and those kids who can't be bothered to go to school, then no problem.
We have an over large population anyway, and they would only be unemployed and claiming benefits, which the rest of us have to pay for in our taxes.

You should know by now, there is no point in listening to what Gordon Brown says. He and his government, have brought us all to this stage. The prisons are so full they are having to release murderers and rapists long before they are due. Now he is talking about adding 16-17 year-old kids into the mix. New Labour have had eleven years to sort the youth problems and prison-capacity out. So don't hold your breath when you hear:
"Mr, Mr, Mr speak, Mr speaker I cca, can, can, assure the House everything will be done to stop people carrying knives." IT JUST AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN

Yes I was also watching BBC 1/News 24 and they did not say that, they said that if they are to continue going to the job centre and "getting knocked down" then what else is there to do. Part of it is being afraid but also those people dont have hope or believe in anything. I am a young person in the age group being talked about and I also live in London but I have goals and something to work towards, Im not motivated by what I see in London so Im taking steps to make sure I never live here.

It all begins at home and you have to change what they are being told at home and how their parents conduct their relationship with their children.

Also, I must add that London is very mundane for young people their just isnt much to do and even Major Ken wanted to increase youth provisions before the election - but now were stuck with Boris. Anyway thats a different topic.

It's a self fulfilling prophecy - they carry knives cos they assume others are, then the others carry knives because the first lot are. lol. So someone needs to break the cycle and get a hobby or something instead.

Jail time is not the answer. It only makes people more dangerous. These kids need help. In the real world, that's not the criminal justice system.
