Has anyone thought about legalizing drugs?

I would not want heroin legalized. I would definitely not want LSD to be generally available. I do agree with you on marijuana, though. If alcohol is readily available, then marijuana should as well. However it will never happen. Hemp (the plant from which marijuana is made) has too many uses and would create too many competitors for today's industry. Hemp paper is far superior to pulp paper, and only slightly more expensive. That would not be good for the pulp paper industry. Hemp cloth is vastly superior to nylon, rayon, dacron and the other synthetic cloths used today to make clothing. The clothing industry and the chemical industries would never stand for that. Marijuana also has medicinal value, for treatment of eye diseases, to relieve nausea in chemotherapy patients, to relieve acid reflux disease, to increase appetite in cancer patients and as a relaxant without side affects. The drug industry would literally lose millions of dollars. So, alcohol is legal because it can't be used for anything but getting drunk and killing people. Marijuana will help people, but it would hurt too many industries. Do you see? Our government would rather see you die that affect the earnings of these industries.

Drugs are already legal. But they are regulated and as long as the pharmaceutical industry gets away with it they will continue to be regulated. Regulations create a lot of jobs.

I am for leagalizing drugs through the food and drug adminsitration for people who are dying from a disease and they have limited choices. And I don't mean Dr. Kevorkian stuff.

I was one of the first people to receive Taxol after it was approved. How many people were dying of cancer and 3 days made the difference in thier receiving Taxol and having a chance or not!

Desperate times require desperate measures!

When I thought I was going to die and leave 2 small children with their unfit father to raise them... I fought and fought. I would have eaten horse crap if the medical profession would have told me it would have kept me on this planet to finish raising decent children!

I don't think recreational drugs should be legalized.

I think people with only months to live should be able to take their chances with drugs that might help if they wish.

My economics teacher had an interesting theory about how the government could legalize drugs and make a huge profit on it. What they would have to do is heavily tax the sale of drugs. That way, the government can have their cake and eat it too. By heavily taxing drugs, they drive the price up and keep consumption about as low as it is being illegal. At the same time, they actually make money on drugs.

they've thought it for sure. why no one legalizes marajuana is because a few decades ago they came out with nylon or some kind of thread or material, i forgot but you can look it up.. and it was in competition with marajuana. marajuana can make rope, fuel, clothes, even material to make tv's.. and so that is the biggest reason it is ilegal. in america its all about businesses getting money, and the government getting money. they work together for power. the bush admin. gets millions off of oil for invading iraq, so they don't want a competitor, plus marajuana is a plant, and the gov't couldnt get taxes from it if it was sold, and boy would it make a lot. i think it should be legalized..alcohol and cigarettes are far more harmful..how many people do you hear dying of marajuana like you do ppl dying of alcohol poisoning? and lung cancer? and drunk driving? there are other legal drugs sold that get you high that you can order off the net or get at some shops.. but they can't produce near what mj would.. also, salvia d.vorum.. it is a hallucinagent that comes in levels of concentrate for highs.. and can make you VERY high off one hit, and hallucinate horribly, the only reason it is legal is because the gov't can't figure out what it does to the body to make you hallucinate. does this sound right? hell no! it could potentially do some dangerous things, but mj, which is given to cancer patients! i mean, if it was critical to health, would they give capsules with thc in it? smoking anything can hurt lungs a little, but cigarettes contain far more harmful things and are addictive..i know healthy ppl that were hippies when they were teens and have smoked all there life and are perfectly healthy. if you smoke cigarrettes all your life, you will cough and have lung problems.. and if you've drank all your life you will have problems with your liver even if you don't realize it... okay so i think i have debated enough. ppl hear the media say its bad and they believe it. but parents will fly to holand where pot is legal and try it! why? b/c they know its legal! its all about how you listen and who you listen to, and if you know your facts:)

i was wondering if you were talking about the effects of legal drugs or illegal. b/c yu first mention legal drugs.. if you are meaning illegal drugs hurt individuals...some do not. marajuana does not hurt people, families, etc near as much as alcohol..drunk fathers, mothers.. drunk driving accidents, alcohol poisoning. and cigarettes.. lung cancer....so it really depends on what drugs are made legal..

I think marijuana should be legal with a usage tax and stiff penalties for offenses while under the influence. I'm not even a user but I think that too much tax money is spent dealing with marijuana users when that money could go towards battling the more hardcore destructive drugs and the people who distribute them.

But seriously, as one of the cash crops we have in the US I would think that making it legal with the same laws as alchohol would be good. I am not sure what stops that one. Once upon a time Opium was available too. But the effects were far more damaging then MJ is. But I can tell you that while I see the benefits I am not sure what is stopping it. I guess that it is just inertia and the fact that if you legalize one then there will be more and more added, after MJ whats next. That sets a precidence and some think a dangerous one. But with taxed and legal MJ I think it would be better than the illegal ways of today, the money saved would be enormous. In any event, ask your congressmen. See what he says

BTW, they tried to outlaw alchohol. It was called Prohibition, and is the only Constitutional Amendment ever fully repealed by another Constitutional Amendment.

Yes! It has come up many times but has so far been voted down with the exception of medical marijuana(still controversial). Ultimately drugs-illegal and otherwise can sap the will and self determination of a people if not carefully monitored. Have you read some of the possible side effects of legal drugs??? CAN'T SEE WHY NOT!!! people who want to do them do it anyway. not to mention all the prescription drugs that are being abused. it's hilarious how many people are on some sort of "meds" for things that only seem to have come into existence in the past 10-15 years. wonder how all those folks hundreds even thousands of years ago got by with out them. everyone uses drugs now a days. (well i don't use drugs, i do like to drink though). LOL

My gf just recently had a crisis because she had a cold and couldn't buy any Sudafed...legalizing pot seems a long way off. People are going way overboard with protections nowadays. I marvel every time I see a kid on a bike completely covered in protective gear, looking less like a kid and more like robocop. I think its time for a social libertarian movement....

Good point. Yes it has been thought of...but have you considered this...they probably wouldnt leagalize it unless they thought of a fool proof way to tax it and monator its income and out go. they can't even do that now i mean if they can't tax it our government wont do it. Besides look at all the choas caused from Mexico from wanted to legalize everything, its just asking to OD.

i've always thought that by legalizing drugs we would eliminate TONS of crime because all those drug smugglers and everything wouldn't have a business anymore :)
