Help - What are my rights? (UK)?

I came to this country 9 years ago with a travel document. My application to be a british citizen is still continuing. But until I know I have indefinate leave in this country and I am allowed to work during this time in the UK.

However, Since all this credit crunch and reccession its very difficult to find a job. I have been working for the 9 years I have been here and have been paying national insurance and tax for this country. However, I lost my job recently leaving me in a huge situation.

I am alone in this country and I cant afford to pay my rent now. I applied for job seekers allowance and I was refused. I have applied for a million jobs so far and I have had no luck. I am never one to abuse the benefit system and its really hard on me as I have been paying all the taxes and NI this country has asked and now would I end up on the streets??
My rent is due on the 26th of this month and I wont be able to afford it. I asked for help and no1 has given it. Isnt there a shelter I can go to? Or any other benefits I can claim?
Please dont think Im taking this country for a ride as I love being here and I have worked hard as anyone else.

What can I do??

Find the address of your local Citizens Advice Bureau and go round to see them. The staff and volunteers are excellent at what they do. This can include doing a benefits check for you (to see what you are entitled to and to help you claim it) and also some aspects of housing advice (which may help to sort out the rent).

The advice from Doethineb, in relation to doing temp work, is also well worth following up.

Google immigration law centres and find the one nearest to you - my sincere sympathy on your situation and I hope that things improve soon for you.

Have you tried temping? It might be the solution for your present problems rather than waiting for a permanent job to turn up. Go around the various agencies in your area and see what's available.

Contact Asylum and immigration services immediately. Push them for a decision on your application. When you have your indefinite leave it will be easier to get a job.
