Hi my work colleague went home last Friday to find he had no electricity.Obviously all the food in his fridge and freezer was no good.It was'nt until yesterday teatime that power was back on.Is he entitled to compensation for no power and also surely compensation for loss of food?
We have been told by other friends that after 24 hours without electricity you are entitled to some form of compensation and again for every day you are without it.Thanks.

Yes, I think the utility company is obligated to keep the electricity running and is liable for its failure to deliver. But if this was the result of weather conditions, particularly unusual ones, that would probably be a situation where they could not be held accountable.
In addition, there is probably a regulatory agency such a state utilities or corporate commission who can fine them or order them to compensate; and may be laws in your state specific to this situation, also look to see if your consumer affairs department or attorney general has powers to sue or order compensation.
And yes, check with your renter's or homeowner's insurance company as well. It may not be a covered situation but you never know until you ask. |

Homeowners insureance will pay for the loss minus the deductable.
If renting, renters insureance does the same thing. |

No. It was not the power company's fault that he did not pay his bill. It is his responsibility to make sure food in his freezer stays frozen, nobody elses. |

Erm in not sure if Insurance would cover him for that ....
But why doesnt he contact the electricty supplier and complain...maybe he will get compensation! |

Probably not from insurance. However I'm sure something could be negotiated with the power company; ex. money off the next bill based on loses and time without power. |
