Honest Question; How many more school shootings do we need?

Honest Question; How many more school shootings do we need?

Before we pass tougher gun control legislation.

Not to be confused with "banning all the guns" you lunatics, god forbid you think we would take your guns away!

Isn't it time we start enforcing these "laws that are already on the books"? Or should we just get used to the Virginia Tech's and Columbine High Schools happening once every few years? Should I maybe send my neices and nephews bullet proof vests, or better yet, .357 handguns so they can "protect themselves" in school?

Why is there a distinct lack of concern on this issue? No new gun legislation since Columbine, more guns on the streets today than ever before; the system we have isn't working!

Don't ban all guns, but lets take some action to do something about this problem.

Haliewa, Did I say I wanted to take people's weapons away? No, In fact I said the opposite. The issue I have is the number of ------>illegal<------- weapons on the streets and the lack of attention the federal government has given this issue.

Toughen the penalties for selling illegal firearms. Put some real funding towards it. Prevent this stuff from happening.

i wonder how fast gun control laws would be passed if some of those dead students were the offspring of Bush or Cheney or any other government official... i wonder.

Blue Steel & Lace
We don't need more gun laws, we need the laws enforced.

Frankly, I don't see how any new law could have kept this person from doing what he did. Maybe if the other students at VA Tech had guns, the shooter might have died instead of killing 32 other people first.

Untie the hands of the police, and allow them to do their jobs, instead of second-guessing them at every turn.
Make the mandatory sentences mandatory instead of allowing district attorneys to reduce the charges, so that the criminal won't be convicted of a crime that carries a mandatory sentence.

Ok, lets look at that, we pass another law, that will make these loons stop and think, hey that's against the NEW gun law so I won't go shoot up the school. It's a Tougher gun law so I won't get off from killing myself as easily as I could with the old Law. Do you see how lame that is. These guys don't care what the law is, how much more illegal is murder? Laws aren't the answer, diagnosing these nut bags before they kill is the answer,

I'm glad you wouldn't want to ban all the guns since that would be unconstitutional. And, yes, they should enforce the gun control laws already in existence. There is no point in having laws and everyone ignoring them.

As I recall, there was a massive increase in the acceptance of promiscuity on campuses after Clinton's terms in office; the conclusion many drew was that presidential actions lent acceptability to what had previously been considered acceptable.

Bush's terms in office have been marked by unprovoked violence directed towards those who never threatened us.

One has to wonder...

There is little or no evidence that tougher gun laws prevent gun crime. Those who are going to violate murder law, certainly won't think twice about illegally concealing a weapon or having a high-capacity magazine.

I think you need to be more specific about what type of gun legislation you'd like to see.

In order to prevent school shootings, we need to look at what causes young people to go to their school and shoot people. Are we dealing with mental disorder? Depression? Abuse?

Some members of the Virginia legislation tried not too long ago. There was a proposed bill (#1572) in the Virginia legislature that would have given students the freedom to carry legally obtained and licensed concealed firearms. The bill was defeated swiftly without ever making it out of the first committee. The bill was proposed because a Virginia Tech student got disciplined for carrying his legal firearm on campus. This is what the VT president had to say at the time:

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."

NONE to answer your question directly.

I also do NOT believe that the problem is guns, but the overall mentality of many people.

Mental health issues have to be addressed without a whitch hunt and very honestly that is the responsibility of the PARENTS. Who knows what set these people off but there had to be signicant hints before; you don't go from "NORMAL" to WHACKED in a couple of hours.

The reason NOBODY will take action is the threat of LITIGATION by some attorney with a HUGE HOUSE payment.

I received a shotgun for my 7th birthday and bought a .22 and a 30'06 in 9th grade; my dad actually made the purchase but they were mine. I had gone hunting with my dad since I was 5 and knew what I was doing. I cleaned my guns on the porch in front of the house and nobody gave it a thought; try that today.

The high school that I went to had a rifle team and an on campus indoor range. I qualified EXPERT in the Navy with a shotgun and an M1.

The burden of school safety falls DEAD BANG on THE PARENTS and EVERY ONE of them that fails to teach and control their children around firearms should be CONVICTED of a minimum FELONY and do HARD TIME!

Maybe with THAT hanging over their heads they might get CONTROL of their KIDS and STOP throwing money at them to compensate for their TOTAL lack of parenting skills.

It is just NOT an issue of gun control, but children and parent control.

I'm so glad I live in AUSTRALIA. We had our shootings now we have very tough gun laws, and guess what no more shootings, America you need to get ride of all your guns.
The argument about guns don't kill ,people do then why not drive around tanks and not cars same deal.

James k
don't need any......need to get the crazy's off the street's.

Em K
Yeah, you guys have some serious problems there.

I know Australia has some issues, but when 35 people were gunned down (and many more injured) in Port Arthur (a historic town in Tasmania), John Howard banned personal guns across the entire country that couldn't be justified for hunting, pest control or whatever.

That was in 1996, and pretty much the whole country would agree that it's the best thing John Howard has done in his eleven (long) years of rule.

As Eddie Izzard said (sorry Eddie if I got it wrong) - 'Guns don't kill people, people kill people, but a monkey would kill people too, if it had a gun...'

US government, get with the program. Why not ban the darn things? They can do no good.

fr_chuck
It is not the gun, never has been, and never will be, if not a gun, it would be hijacking a propane truck or a gas truck or some other bomb. The criminal can always get a gun, look at drugs,

John K
Six more......duh???

My left-wing liberal state, Massachusetts, has the toughest and most paranoid gun control laws in the nation. Yet that doesn't stop the dozens of shootings with illegal handguns in Massachusetts, three just last week in Boston.

The criminally insane will always get a gun while tough gun laws only hurt the law abiding citizen.

waia2000
I was thinking the same thing.

meathookcook
I wholeheartedly agree with enforce the laws we have, except without ongoing, intrusive searches there is no way to tell who is carrying a gun or not. It was illegal for the shooter to be armed on campus. How do you stop them from violating that law without infringing on our rights?

BTW, statistically you are about as likely to win the Powerball or Mega Millions lottery than to be involved in a school shooting.
