How are you supposed to be served with a lawsuit in California?

I was mailed two summons by regular, first class mail from some obscure address last week. I am being sued by a debt collector, but I only received the summons through the mail. I know they're real, and they're on record with the courthouse, but I was never personally served. Is this legitimate? And how do I know when my 30 days to answer is up?

They can serve you in a number of ways. Mail is one of them. Your 30 days starts from the postmark on the letter. Trying to get out of it because they mailed you the summons is not going to work so you had better respond ASAP.
