Well, my mom and I have lived in the same apartment complex for years. Over the winter we were forced to move because of a pipe break in our apartments. We moved into a second floor apartment of a different building. At first, it seemed as if our neighbors were being very kind and considerate by asking us how much we've been able to move so far and everything until we were settled in. Unfortunately, their behavior towards us got very bad after not too long. My mother has a bad knee. She needs to get surgery on it and she can't walk without making noise. She also works at home typing on the computer which sometimes she has to do in the early morning or late at night due to lack of work during the day.
From my understanding, my neighbor does not leave the house very often and they often hear the floor in my mom's room creak when she walks. Also, if you can imagine, she is in a lot of pain with her knee and occasionally needs to get up in the middle of the night to try to make it feel better. I'm sure the noise is bad, but they also make a lot of noise themselves.
The neighbor often bangs on the walls to express how they're feeling. We've talked to the apartment managers about it and they say that we can't prevent the floor from squeaking and my mom needs to be able to work. We do not have anything against our neighbor other then the fact that they can't seem to understand what medical problems my mom has. The time we've tried to talk to them in person, they would not answer their door so we gave up. My mother is just about terrified to work at night and get up because it'll upset the downstairs neighbor.
We can't afford to move and we're worried that the problem will get worse when my mom does get surgery and needs crutches or a walker. We don't want our neighbors to have to move of course, and we really can't even afford to move into a different building of the apartment complex. Any suggestions would really be appreciated!

Switch rooms with your mother or possibly move mom out to the living room, where she worked, where she can walk around. Once she recovers she can go back to her room. |

This is a long shot, but can you switch apartments? It would be easier for your Mom too after surgery not to have to walk to the 2nd floor. Wish you and your Mom well. |

regardless of what time it is, ALL your mother is doing is walking,, she is NOT jumping up and down and/or running around the apartment..
when you live in an apartment and have someone above you, you EXCEPT the risk of them making noise.. and walking, is NOT considered noise..
get your mother a cain.. so when/if they pound on the walls, tell her to pound with her cain.. what are they going to do.. call the cops and say she is walking around her home.
You can also tell your landlord.. explain things to them.. you are NOT doing anything wrong and tell your mother that she should NOT be afraid to walk around in her own home.. |

Try writing a letter to the other tenant and, preferably, have the manager look at and sign the letter as well. Explain your Mom's condition and see if the neighbors will be understanding. You should be able to "transfer" to another apt in one of the buildings with minimal costs - hiring someone to help with the move. If you have been there that long, the management will hopefully be cooperative and help with the move - it was not your fault in the first place that the pipe broke in the original apt and caused the change of apts. If the manager is very uncooperative, you maybe can get help from a Seniors group or someone in a local political office (just ideas I'm putting out there) |
