How can we put a stop to gun crime in the UK?

I think it has to start with education not just school but parents too.
Why not also make tougher punishment - life means life!
Too many kids think a gun will give them respect and gangs are the way of making a name for yourself.
Everyone blames other aspects like rap culture and movies but surely people can listen to music without having to pick up a gun.

In the 1950's few criminals would carry a gun because they were frightened that if they used it and killed someone they would get hanged.

Tougher sentencing as a deterrent for one. And when they do get imprisoned it should be hard labour - not a holiday camp xxx

I think if the police knew the it would stop. Harsher penalties for carrying a gun, now you can buy one on the street for as little as Â£30.00.

Bring back capital punishment for the mere possession of a firearm.

Allow those who need protection the opportunity to carry a weapon. People need to learn that the police can not protect you they can write a report about how you where killed though.

Crimes will occur despite the weapon of choice. Gun, Knife, baseball bat.

Most 80% of murders are with knives. Most deaths are with cars. lets make knives and cars illeagle.

FYI - at least in America violent crimes are way down. They are lower than they where in the 70s but the news likes to dramatize crime making people think its worse today than ever.

Statistically and historically harsher laws don't deter crime.
1) if they thought they where going to get caught they wouldnt do it.
2) murders are 95% one family memberkilling another and anger and emotion are involved. Most people in this state of mind don't read the peneties of a crime prior to acting on thier emotion.

I can just see a criminal holding the statutes in thier hand yelling at their partner while pointing at the page. 'I just read the law and if I kill you I will get life; you are sooooo lucky I read this book or you would be dead!!!'

Murder is murder no matter what tool is used. Making a law that makes using a gun worse than a knife will do nothing but get you stabbed.

we cant im afraid but we can reduce gun crime by imposing tougher penalties such as 10 years minium instead of the pethetic sentences that are given these days'

Make murder a crime punishable by death (as it used to be before the do-gooders spoilt our country).
Make ownership of an illegal firearm be an offence punishable by 5 years in prison.
A crime eg robbery ,using a gun should have a 15 year sentence.
All to be served in a PROPER prison (no sat TV, pool tables, state of the art gymnasia etc).

a good place to start was to stop importing them...but i doubt that's ever going to happen!!

all we can do is educate people to show the devastating consquences guns can have one families...not just the immediate family members as if someone is killed with a gun, there is a rippling effect which goes through and entire community.

i believe that people believe that if they carry a gun for protection then they are deluded as they are prepared to use it...now if they understood that if they carried a gun or a knive then they WILL (no ifs or buts) go to prison for a very long time. Then this might disuade(sp??) people from using or carrying any guns.

so in summary i believe that since guns will always be about, the only sensible and attainable option is to educate people to try and put a stop to gun crime.

by having a better state education system so poor kids with problems can be identified at a young age.

Greater investment in youth groups, centres and sports facilities that keep kids off the street.

12 months national service for all kids that leave school under the age of 18, 6 months national service at 18. Male and female- not to teach kids how to fight wars but to teach them discipline, get them fit and active and show them how team work can help communites.

Legalise guns. If guns arent illegal there can be no gun crime!

Its a difficult one, because aside from banning guns and making possession illegal harsher sentences etc theres not an awful lot we can do except walk aroudn wearing bullet proof vests. I guess it all boils down to up bringing and education. But how can we even have control of that since we lost control of our borders. I read somewhere that immigrants from war torn countries tend to have post traumatic stress disorder or something and that the violence in their upbringing affects them, and their behaviour is rubbing off youths around the country. Thats no excuse for our nationals that decide to carry guns and shoot etc but it does present a question that needs to be answered. What is the source of the problem? Is it shooting games? is it rappers glorfiying gun crime? is it immigrants? we dont know, and until we find out we cant begin to tackle it.

the only way to combat gun crime is the death penalty. but every one is too PC to issue actual punishment to criminals SO!! leave it to flourish. at the moment gun toting little penile challenged street gangsters seem to be killing mainly!! each other. perhaps justice is being dealt. I'd like to say 'to all those that think pointing out the pain gun crime causes to the victim is the answere to combat " wanna be"gangsters' you are not looking at inteligent people that respond to reason. you would not try to reason with a mad dog.so stop trying to reason with criminals. get it into your head, if they thought like you do, they wouild not be criminals.

Yeah - give all the guns to the police so only they can commit gun crime! Alternatively, burn down the gun and munitions factories: if they're not made then they can't be used.
