How do online companies verify that someone is 18 or older?

Like tobacco companies, if the order is payed with a debit card how do the companies verify that the purchaser is of age?

Help!

They may ask for the name on the card and it should be someone who's legal. If you lie then your card will be declined. However, if all they ask for is your number then you should be fine.
