They are fed a 2000 calorie diet approved by the U.S. Dept of Health. The weight gain comes from the snacks they buy at the commissary. Also they are not forced to eat, many skip meals and eat junk. |

Prisoners are allowed to buy junk food and snacks. |

The cheapest and therfore most common staple in Prisons is starches like Rice and bread, that combined with sitting around and little outside activity = get fat. |
|

Dire Wolf

No. It's not because of second or third helpings at mealtime. It's because there is a commisary that sells them all sorts of starchy things like ramen noodle soup and cheap cookies that are mostly flour. They don't have access to decent nutriton, so they eat anything they can. That combined with less activity than they would ordinarily be getting, some of them get fat. |

They eat bread and potatoes and pasta and all of those starches make you gain weight. If you watch the movie Dead Man Walking which is a great movie, Sean Penn actually talks about weight gain in prison. |

Prisons typically feed prisoners a lot of starches, which cause weight gain. There is also not as much opportunity for exercise on the inside. |

Wow where do I start, first of all you cannot assume that prison meals are balanced , healthy meals, for instance in SC. prisons the ONLY nutritional requirement for meals is 2000 calories a day, now some inmates will sell or trade food from the kitchen (yes inmates do the cooking and serving) and also there will be a "canteen" where inmates can buy food, cigs., etc. to eat in their cells....couple the quality of food with the fact that most guys spend a lot of time laying around, and some lay around and eat, and you get a fat convict !!! as to the gal that thinks life is pretty good in prison ...wow girl you have gotten some bad intel on that... the food you get is the stuff that the prison system has outbid the dogfood companies for! ( not a joke)...have seen "not fit for human consumption" stamped on boxes of chicken...the chickens that the farm finds dead on the floor of the houses...saw hotdogs packaged in canada in 1977...ever have spaggetti sauce with chunks of beef liver in it? YUMMY ... The sad part is I saw a man lose his kidney over a piece of dogfood chicken...sound like someplace you want to be hun? and Franklin...got some words for you too, love the politically correct response...sounds like the government really looks out and cares for prisoners when you say it like that...biggest load of B/S ive heard in a while, I know what goes on and I am sick of ppl like you trying to lie about the conditions to the general public who hopefully will never learn the truth firsthand. my cellmate DIED because he was having a heart attack and was told to "walk up to medical" by a lazy punk C/O...he made it about 50 feet before he fell out (couldn't make the 150 yards across camp to get help) ... I know nobody cared that the man died, he was a triple lifer with no family. but he was still a human being, too many C/Os forget that |

yea that's right

your cousin is the lunch bully then. |

Maybe his metabolism is slow so he gains weight fast. And also maybe he is not as active as others, like he doesn't move as much. |
|

Lack of movement. |

They can buy snacks and food other than prison meals, not to mention that everyone has different metabolisms, so everyone processes and stores food differently. And if the level of activity isn't there, then that will also contribute to the weight gain. |

Even in prison.. The rich have their benefits... They can buy snacks and other comforts..
Maybe not all, but some.. |

Was this person taking alot of drugs or drinking alot of alcohol when they were out? Were they eating regularly on the outside? Sometimes when they go to prison on drug charges they start eating regularly again and gain weight, their skin clears up, their hair shines again and they start looking better... |

It could be the person's metabolism slowed down or was always slow. If they spend more time in their cell than anywhere else, no exercise. But, people do bring them candy and snacks and they can earn them by working too. |

They do have a personal account where their relatives can send them money and then they buy all kinds of junk food. Another thing that happens in like in school cafeteria foods they use some sort of fillers in the food to stretch out the food supplies and from what I am told the fillers are fattening. |

They often are not allowed any physical activities at all. I had a friend in there and he would go months without being outside of a tiny cell and a not much bigger communal room. No sun, no exercise, nothing but three meals a day and a television. You try that and see how quickly you gain weight. |

Some workout a lot some don't
they also get buy some extra food if they want or get it from another immate
However some people do gain weight in jail and a few actually lose weight
Regulation vary from area to area I live in massachussetts and some inmates tried to start a riot after cut back on their provisions in Bristol county
But generally there food is pretty cheap there over 2 million of them and what would be your motivation to try look good |

Some people react differently to different situations. Prison food, like all institutional food, can be very fattening. So like everything else, it depends on the person eating the food. Going to prison, like going to college for the first time, is a significant change in your lifestyle. When you go to college, they say you gain about 15 pounds. There is even a word for it: The Freshman 15.
People do different things in prison. Some prisoners spend much of their day in their cells just sitting. Without exercise, you are going to get fat. Others exercise. Others work. What they do in prison may be totally different than what they did on the outside. If your cousin had a job working retail, for instance, and now he does nothing, he may have been thin on the outside, but he becomes fat in prison. Maybe he wasn't fed as much on the outside.
Also, prison is stressful. Some people deal with it quite well. Some don't. And stress causes some people to eat more and others to eat less. Moreover, prison food isn't all that tasty. Some eat enough to get by. Others eat it all no matter what.
I would say your cousin is eating a lot and not exercising.
Also, even when there is no change in lifestyle or diet, the older you get, the more likely you are to get fat. Young people stay trim and can eat as much as you want. But there is a certain point in your 20s when you can't pull off that trick anymore.
Your cousin can put himself on a diet and exercise regimen. Or he might get a job in prison that changes his life style. And that might make him thinner. |

you that people have different metabolisms, some are faster others slower. The ones with fast metabolisms don't gain weight easily, and the ones with slow metabolisms gain weight faster. Maybe that explains why he gained weight..
also, i don't know how much exercise they were getting |
|

live_life_large

yeh coz they dont get nutritious food its all carbs and fats |

Genetics/depression/low metabolism if prisoner doesn't do any physical activity, vice versa. Most prisoners exercise inside their shoe box. Some prisoners would rather read all day and not do much physical activity. All those factors contribute to weight gain. |
|

LabRat

Just like people outside of prison gain weight - genetics & bad food.
Go figure. |

The ones who stay in shape do a lot of weight lifting and other exercises. |

awesomeguy who is cool and great

they are fed food that has a lot of sodium, carbs, calories ect... most prisons only allow 1 hr yard time and a lot of that is just sittin around. for my opinion if you are in jail then you should only be allowed to stay in your cell and not allowed out. you did something wrong you should pay for it, most of the people in jail get free educations, jobs, they get cable. i dont think they should be allowed any privelages sorry my opinion |

Sorry to say this that all people that goes to jail is sent by a family member. I should know I sent my kids father to jail and he is about to go back becuase we can not afford to do pay the money they want him to pay. Two charges were bogus charges. I know for a fact they were. We are still fighting to get those charges dropped. |
