How do prisons today compare to what they were like 50 years ago?

Was it really bad for prisoners? I've done time in prison recently and it was tough enough but people say it used to be much worse

Never been in prison but in the early 50s I spent many months in an RAF convalescent centre near plymouth
For relaxation we often had coach trips around dartmoor
On the moor we often saw convicts pulling carts of stones , breaking them up & building walls
On one occasion there was a prison breakout &the moor was swarming with warders ,Police & surprisingly the army
Apparantly Princetown gaol was a "Hard labour" prison but they were not all like that

It was much worse and should be much worse again. People might be so keen to go back in then.

i never been in one. but i think 50 years ago was better. i think to day prisons better then any hotel in blackpool

much better now, have own p/c , in a heated cell, oh, my own mobile, 3 meals a day, just conform and you'll be alright . no bills great !
