How do you find out who copyrighted something?

Someone I knew gave me one of their old T shirts they never wore and it has a saying on the front that I was thinking about buying the rights to from the company, but I have nio idea what the company is. Can I go on a website and search it and it'll tell me who owns it or is there another way?

Your best option is to search copyright registrations at the Copyright Office. However, because copyright automatically attaches to a work, there may or may not be a registration to verify that a copyright exists.
