If you contact the Information Commissioner they will give you all the information that you need about what you can ask for and from whom. They have many helpful leaflets which they will send you. Their telephone number is 01625 545745. |

Assuming you are in the UK:
www.ico.gov.uk - provides information.
A request has to be in writing (including email), so if you can request the information you seek via their own website, this will be fine. All you need to do is ask your question. You can ask for anything, but obviously some information may be confidential or withheld for other reasons and if this is the case, you will be told why. |

In the UK, the request needs to be made (preferably in writing) to the public authority concerned. And it can ONLY be a public authority. The request should clearly identify exactly which document/information is required.
There are some exceptions as to what can be obtained -
no personal information (unless that individual permits);
documents relating to criminal investigation;
documents that need to be withheld for national security
amongst others.
The request can only be made for documents that already exist. It cannot require the preparation of something new, and a request can be rejected if it is too burdensome to carry out or is vexatious in nature.
