You don't automaticly become an organ donor, you can choose to be one, and have to sign something. They cant take your organs without your written consent. |

no such thing in England. you carry a donor card if you want to donate your organs - simple as that. nobody here can use your organs unless you have given written permission or told the family of your wishes.
EDIT: Steph J is totally correct!! |

On the back of your driver's license, there is a donor sticker. To become a donor, you must date it, sign it, have 2 witness signatures, and check either the box next to "Any organ or tissue" OR "Only the following" and list the organs you would like to donate. If you DON'T want to be an organ donor, all you have to do is... not sign it. Simple as that.
But why WOULDN'T you want to be an organ donor? Once you're dead, you don't need them. They throw your organs away, unless you give them to someone who desperately needs them. If you needed a lung in 6 months or you would ultimately die, wouldn't you want someone to be generous enough to give you theirs after they've passed on? To me, not allowing others to use something you'll never need again is selfish. |

I cant believe how many people are up in arms about this subject.
Its not even been made law, it was just a suggestion by a doctor, so chill you dont need to opt out yet.
Although I cant think why you would want to. |

Why would you want to do that?
I hope you never have to sit by and watch someone you know wait for an organ donor! |

Why are people so ignorant about this?! Let me spell it out for you.... In order for your organs and tissues to be harvested for donation, your next of kin MUST give permission. These decisions are made in the hospital. If they're considering organ/tissue donation, you're already a vegetable, so you can't very well tell them your wishes to begin with. Whatever you chose to do, you have to tell whoever your next of kin is and make sure they agree with you. Ultimately, your family can decide that they don't like your decision concerning donation and do as they please, whether you have a donor card or not.
But I have to ask....why WOULDN'T you want to be a donor? I've yet to hear a good answer to this question. |

For the present if you do NOT sign an organ donor agreement, then your organs cannot be legally removed from your body and transplanted into someone else when you are dead.
Before anything happens concerning your rights or anyone elses rights over ownership of their organs after death, an act of parliament must be presented in the House of Commons in the form of a Bill.
Any move to make it mandatory for we the people to have to sign a document disallowing our organs to be used after death, will be met with massive opposition. MPs are already aware that a vast majority of the people are not in support of this.
Let's put it another way. MPs who do not pay attention to the electorate have no chance of being re-elected.

Is it as easy as "Just say no?" - not sure but it should be. |

The latest proposals from Sir Liam Donaldson, Government Medical Adviser, are that we will have to officially object to organ donation, probably with your GP.
No objection and they can have the lot.
This is apparently the system used in several Europian countries. |

Golly...I'd call the local hospital and get the number for the centre or whatever...and then tell them. They must have a data base...but the fact is that if you are not carrying a card and your relatives know that it is not what you want after death then youd be ok as relatives must give their permission before anything is taken. |

There is no law as yet which states we have to opt out of being a organ donor.
It is just someones suggestion, that instead of opting in, all organs can be used unless we opt out.
I have just asked a question as to if this is a good idea. |

At the moment you don't have to, you opt into being a donor but if you don't tell someone your wishes before you pop your clogs they cannot take your organs, they are only talking about making standard procedure and even if they do you can still opt out. |

Holy cow, it is clear that this web site is in English but as an American, I now understand that not only us Amercans use the internet! I suspect about half of the people on this site are Americans, half from the UK or some other English speaking country.
The questions asked about individual liberties, about the rights of the individual, and so on are outrageous. Your body is yours, and it is not anyone else's by default. You have to make an effort to be an organ donor in the US, unless you are in the military and then it is the default that another soldier can get from you what he needs if you're killed in battle and he needs your aorta or something. You have a right to own and carry a gun if you're not a proven criminal, you have the rights to so many things unles you are unfortunate enough to be from some other country where the government thinks it owns the citizens.
Please read the US Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights, and if you are from another country fix it! You have the right to exist at your pelasure, not anyone else's! |
