They only give prison sentences like that to make sure that the person will never be allowed out of prison (they are too dangerous for society) - it's basically a life sentence. When they die, that's it, they die - nothing more happens. |

Actually, lengthy sentences mean the individual will not be eligible for parole for many years or decades. Also, sentences for multiple offenses are often imposed consecutively rather than concurrently. If one of the convictions is later overturned, the person won't get credit for time served on the remaining sentences.
As the judge said to the 70 year old man who was sentenced to 50 years when he complained that he couldn't do that many years at his age: "Just do as many as you can." |

Well, I guess they dispose of the body once an inmate dies. The only reason they gave 150 years instead of life is because the crimes added together don't technically deserve a life sentence. Besides, with a life sentence, there's a chance for parole. You have to serve a certain part of a year-based term until you're eligable for parole. |

Well the reason they add all those extra years of prison is because of their parole. Longer the years in prison, the longer it takes to be ready for parole. |

I heard of someone who got 99 consecutive terms of 99 years each. So I guess it could be worse. |

It's presented that way to make sure you die in prison...if they just sentenced you to 60 years..you get time off for good behavior and other things and the next thing you know your out...if you get 150 years..your there for YOUR life! |

Usually when you get life, you can make parole some day. I hope madoff gets gang banged in jail. His wife should be homeless and all their assets used to give back to the people he ripped off. |

The idea behind a sentence like that, or what they used to call "Life and a day" is to say that the crime was so heinous that it should be classed worse than a simpler "life in prison" conviction. Killing one person is horrible, but murdering and raping children is worse. To give both people the same sentence doesn't seem like justice. Furthermore, if the sentence is revisited, the judge who convicts the criminal wants the future judge who will revisit the sentence to know that in judge #1's opinion, this crime was so horrible that it warrants more of a sentence than can be humanly possible.
A person who gets life in prison might get parole in a few decades. A person who gets "life and a day" or 150 years is unlikely to ever get parole. |

like if the court took some years off for a random reason u would still be in there for a very long time |

Basicly, it means you are in there for life. The only reason the nuber of years you must serve is so high is because they want to make sure criminals not get back out if they mout lived their sentance. Legaly the court must state how long you must stay in jail even if you are sentanced for life so they just come up with an impratical number like 163 years. |

I think those type of sentences is given so that criminals could never get out of jail.there's no way they can live long enough to get even a chance at parole. |
|

katie

you don't, it's basically life in prison unless they let you out on parole first |

Of course no one lives to be 150 years old, so they will be in prison for life. Nothing happens if they die before 150 years is up because they are dead! |

You have no idea how long these people are going to live so they have to be to safe, what happens if they find a new plant (that cures everything) in the corner of the Brazilian rain forest, and they start testing it on inmates then you are all screwed. |

There are two ways to serve, sequentially or concurrently.
You could have 6 concurrent 25 year sentences, which is still 150 years, but you serve them all at the same time, i.e. you are inside for 25 years.
Or you could spend the rest of your natural life in prison if you had to serve them serially/sequentially. |

They just say that, so even if you live to 100 your still going to be in prison.
Nothing happens if they have more years left to go. There's nothing left after dying. I think that's punishment enough. |
