How does the emancipation process work?

It's for a project--about a girl who emancipates herself from her mother. I'm writing a journal that's going to be from her perspective as she goes through the process. Thanks!

Emancipation is not what most kids think it is. Emancipation does not allow you to sign contracts, drink, ignore curfew, etc. An emancipated person must still obey all laws just like they were living at home.
If an emancipated minor violates the law, the emancipation is revoked and the minor goes off to live in reform school or other place of supervised shelter.
To become emancipated, a minor must prove they are mature enough to support themselves while attending school. It is reserved for cases when a child's home life is abusive / dangerous or for some other reason they can't live at home, and a foster home can not be found.
It is mostly used for teen orphans and the such. |
