How does the state find out about pregnancy of a minor by an adult?

I'm 19 years old, however, one of my best friends is pregnant by a 24 year old guy, and will be 17 by the time the baby is born. She really wants the baby to take the father's last name, so we were both wondering if the hospital actually verifies the birth father's information, or if she can say that he is 17 so that he won't go to jail, or can she say she is over 18 (I know this is an odd example, but the chick who had 14 kids apparently put a different name on each birth certificate, so that means they don't verify the information, right?)? Also, if she intends to live with him will they verify her info if she's not on the lease, and has no mail sent to the apartment? If he picks her up from the hospital, can she say he is a family friend or something? And finally, if her parents don't report the guy and none of her friends or family or the hospital do (that is, if she can do what I said above), then the state won't find out right? Please don't be critical, she knows she made a mistake, but the guy and I both intend to be here for her fully.

Yes, a crime was committed, because sadly we live in one of the few states (California) where the age of consent is 18. That's why we're all so worried.

another YA!
she can name her childs last name whatever she wants no questions asked. if she wanted to name it "heavenly pretty child" she could.

the father of the child doesnt have to be named on the birth cert. do not put his name on the birth cert. he can get it done when she is 18 and they wont say anything about it. she can say at the hospital that he is the father, just have him refuse to sign the birth cert. they arent gonna ID him.

she can say she is going to live with her mom at the hospital, making it the address for the doctors and babys doctor and so on.

good luck, i hope it works out for them.

Well the first thing is, was any crime even committed? If she is 16 then she is of legal age in most US States and almost all other developed countries. In only a few US States is the age of consent 17 or 18.

But no, a hospital will not tell the cops about a new moms 'baby daddy'.

It probably depends on the state. She doesn't have to tell them anything about the father. She can give the baby whatever last name she wants, because she wants to. It's her baby. If the hospital finds out he's 24 (assuming it's illegal in your state), they probably have a duty to report, since she's a minor. However, she is under no obligation to tell them who the father is. She can even tell them she doesn't know...that she got drunk and hooked up with 20 other 17-year olds in another state one weekend, and it might be one of them. :) Good luck to all of you.

i am sympathetic to your situation, one of my good friends got pregnant by an older guy when we were still in high school. please consider this advice from someone who is not trying to be judgmental: DO NOT tell your friend to not put his name on the birth certificate. if he is willing, let him sign it. if not, she is looking for a long, expensive battle in court. as for the friend i mentioned, the guy cheated on her and eventually left her. it's not unheard of. plans change. she needs as much legal protection as possible.
