It's up to the Judge and the case. You can get fined or send to a detention area or both.
For example if you refuse to say the name of someone that stole a car, then you would be held in contempt, and put under custody UNTIL you speak out, or the court feels you got enough (some reporters have been in jail for months for refusing to tell the name of an informant). |

You are held in contempt for one two reasons, either you pissed the judge off and he/she orders you held in contempt, and sentences you to 10days or so. In this way you can be held in contempt for up to a year.
Or you are withholding states evidence, or like a reporter who wont give up his source, in a case like that, you can be held indefinitely until you talk or the judge lets you go. |
