How long do u get for arson?

my boyfriend set someones car on fire and her got court next month does any one no what will happen to him and how long will he get?

Ben
section 4 (1) of the criminal damage act 1971 states a maximum of life imprisonment.

He won't receive life, but expect a lengthy custodial sentence.

However, NOBODY on here can predict the sentencing of a court case.

This is impossible to answer, but the likely sentence is one of a term of imprisonment. Many of the people who commit this offence have mental problems and if this is the case there could be a more lenient sentence. If your boyfriend was acting out of revenge or some other unpleasant motive towards the owner, this could increase the sentence. This is a case which can only be heard at the Crown Court, where the sentencing powers are much higher than at the Magistrates' Court.

The people who are talking about life imprisonment may be thinking of the more serious offence of arson with intent to endanger life. Presumably the car here was empty!
