It depends on where you live. Most places, the statute of limitations to file a complaint with the police/prosecutor is 1 or 2 years from the date of the incident for criminal misdemeanor assault.
If you're talking about a civil suit as opposed to criminal charges, it is two years from the date of the incident in most places, but again that time may be different depending on where you live. |

If you are assaulted, call the police immediately. If you do not call as soon as possible after the assault, especially if there is no other physical evidence or witnesses, the police will not be able to do much.
If this is a matter of domestic violence, contact your local county attorney to file an application for a protective order. Again, sooner is better than later.
For your own health and well-being, contact the local safe house or shelter for a referral to a psychotherapist to help you find out why you did not call out for help as soon as possible. |
