How should one debate Mary Jane?

So, the majority of my friends are excessive pot smoking hippies. I myself am neither. I smoke on rare occasion, but don't really like it. I find myself in the middle of legalizing marijuana debates quite frequently. I'm not completely opposed to it but I can't think of any really good reasons not to legalize it.
I would like to know why you think cannabis is bad or why you think it should not be legal.
P.S. I don't want to hear why it is good. I'm quite familiar with the positive side.
Any alcohol comparisons would also be helpful.

While some people are fine with pot, there are others whose decisions can be affected based on whether or not they are high. Some people become lazy, too laid back and very irresponsible when it comes to going to work, school, or paying bills. It is similar to an alcoholic, all they need is the pot and all is fine. It's just another addiction that will be even more severe and harder for people to overcome if the drug is legalized. You can't claim that legalizing it will affect people's abuse of it since alcohol is legal and many people have trouble with it. People argue that Amsterdam is proof that this isn't true, but if you research amsterdam's welfare system:

it points out that it is suffering due to "lack of work ethic" and yes, there are other reasons, but it is a valid point. There is also an issue of high crime, which in some, not all, cases could be a result of people supporting their pot habit just as in america we have con artists and the like supporting their drinking habit. Despite lack of research, you can't deny that the drug can inhibit some people's ability to drive, work, and function as a responsible adult. |
