How to file for unemployment extension in California?

I need to know how to file for unemployment extension ASAP.
The 800 number they have listed on the EDD site is useless.
The web site is no help at all. I called the local office and they said that, they usually just tell you do call the 800 number only, no help is done in person.
So I am at loss. My last unemployment check stated that I probably qualify for an extension but I needed to call. So I am reaching a endless loop. Anybody that actually renewed their, can give me some advice. Please help a single dad out.

The article mention below is nothing new to me. I need actual steps to file this not informational articles that do not help me at all. it's mid-April right now and I am a single dad. I need action not just informational articles

Found this in an article:
On March 27, 2009, the Governor signed legislation that would allow unemployed workers in California to potentially receive up to another 20 weeks of unemployment insurance (UI) benefits. This is an additional extended benefit program known as the FED-ED extension.
The Department is currently working on the programming to file and process the FED-ED extensions. It is anticipated this programming will be completed by mid April. When the programming is completed, claimants who have already exhausted all of their regular UI and current federal extension benefits, and are retroactively entitled to a FED-ED extension, will be notified by mail that additional benefits are available. They will be able to file online.

I have recently filed for the first extension, and like you it was a very stressful situation. I found that if you call right at 8 am, when they first open, your chances of speaking with an operator is much higher. If it is busy hang up and try again. Also try calling Saturday mornings. I believe they are open at 10 am until 2 pm. On Saturday they do not have access to your unemployment history but they should be able to help you out. No guarantees but hopefully this help.
