I'm sixteen and I live in Texas. Is it legal for my parents to force me to quit my job? (it is a legal job)?

I work at a Cinemark movie theater and like I said, I'm sixteen and in the state of Texas. Can my parents legally make me quit my job? Also, do I have the right to refuse? Additional Details The reason is simple. Its like taking away a phone or tv privelages, but they think they can take away my job that easily. They can take everything from me but I need my job to survive, I buy my own stuff, I'm saving up to pay for a car and insurance and gas and college and a home to live in... They can't take away my job, I need it like anyone else.

I'm pretty sure that they can do whatever they want to do, since you're still a minor. I'm also sure they probably have a reason to want you to quit, a reason that seems good to them. I notice you don't mention what that reason is. All I can suggest is that you sit down and talk with them about their decision, and see if some sort of agreement can be reached. If they're adamant about you quitting your job, then you should at least persuade them to allow you to give your employer a decent notice.
Good luck. |

I dunno if it's legal, but until you have the means to support yourself I'd say it's in your best interests. |

Why do your parents want you to quit?
If your job is affecting your school work, yes they can, and you should.
If they want you to quit because they don't like the theater, or because it's too far away from your home, or because you're working too late and it's not safe or you're in an unsafe part of town - yes, they still have the right to demand you quit your job.
Of course, you can say no - but while you're in their home, living under their care, you have to do what they say. If you are emancipated and are living on your own and you are paying your own bills, disregard my comments. |

You have the right to refuse and tehy have the right to make your life really difficult....
Like no car to get to work...
They could make you life hard at work with your employer and in the long run most likely get you fired....
But they have the right to d waht ever they do what they think is best for you and you should give them the benefit of the doubt....
Perhaps you should tell us why they want you to quit what is there reason for this action.... |

Yes, they have that right, as you also have the right to argue the matter with them. You are still a minor in the state of Texas until your 17, at that time, if you can support yourself, there is little your parents can do legally. |

Yes they can, unless you become emancipated. |

you need a Texas lawyer to give you a dependable answer here.
In spite of the fact that all Americans are supposed to have some basic rights, if you are under 18, the courts just don't give you all those rights. but since you are between 16 and 18, there is a possibility you could win a court case. But, frankly, it is not highly likely.
Make sure that you list this question both under the law category AND in the Texas category.

If you are under eighteen and live under their roof than they have every right. Are they asking you to quit your job because your grades are slipping. As a parent I would do the same thing. I know this is not what you want to hear. |

Yes, they can do that. It's called parenting.
Obey your parents. |

I would think so. Your a minor until your 18 unless your emancipated. What your parents say goes unless it's abuse or something. Refuse them, then you could get in trouble with juvenile and become a juvenile delinquent depending on how much you resist them. |

Until you are 18, you are under your parents' control. |
