I've had this question in mind for some time and...?

Let's say an innocent person is walking down the street, then they get hit by a stray bullet in a drive by shooting. Paramedics arrive and that person gets transported to the hospital to get treated. Does that innocent bystander get hit with a hospital bill? Even though he wasn't asking to get shot or get into trouble?

This question has been in my mind for sometime and would like if anyone could help me with an answer. Thanks you in advance if you can help.

Yes, they would be on the hook for the bill.

If someone was caught, they would get sued after they are convicted (if you have the money to sue), but you can't get blood out of a stone... particularly one that can no longer be gainfully employed because that stone is in jail.

The bills, would likely be VERY high, trauma care is very pricey, and docs have lots of bills to pay... so, unless they had a ridiculous health plan, or buckets of $ just laying around, they would default, go into collections, get reported to the credit agencies, and once again be a victim.

Pretty sad, huh

Yes. The victim would be stuck with the hospital bill unless the shooter can be caught and proved guilty. It's no different than a lightning strike, fall, or any kind of other sudden accident.

Thank God for our health care system! Yep. The innocent bystander gets shot then assaulted with a six figure hospital bill. Good thing we don't have single payer health care here.

Treatment is treatment. Welcome to the US and the medical system here.

If you can identify the shooter then you can sue them to pay the bill. Good luck with that.

U know I relly don't think they shuld. The insurance company shuld pay for it. If they don't have insurance then idk. Did you here of this somewhere.

Libertarian and proud of it
The person who shot the bullet would be liable for the hospital costs.
If for some reason they could not find the shooter, he could not be held liable, since he never actually asked to go to the hospital. They just took him.
