I LIGHTLY bumped a car in the parking lot?
Find answers to your legal question.

I LIGHTLY bumped a car in the parking lot?

Okay, I was pulling in, it was the morning, and the parking was tight. There was a truck in front of me(I was in a light car) and I was literally inching along at .1MPH. Then, my car stopped. Didn't bounce or recoil, it stopped. Not even a crack or noise or anything. I knew I was touching his so I backed up a little, got out, and assessed the damage.

Apparently, there was not even a dent. So I even left my car where it was for 50 min and came back, got in, checked out the cars 1 more time, and drove off.

What is your assessment of the situation? Did I do the right thing? Should I have put my info on his car anyway? There was no visible damage(dent, scrapped paint, anything). Could I be held liable?

I'm a responsible person and I'm shaken up by this. I just want honest opinions, thanks.

If there had been even a dent, I would have left some info. But there was no damage.
Additional Details
No damage to my car either BTW. I checked his out for sev minutes and I didn't see even a dent.

It's nice you're a responsible person, there is a shortage of those on this planet. You could not be held liable because the owner of the car you bumped has no idea what your license plate number is. And even if he did, what are his damages? None! There's no cause of action.

If there REALLY IS no scratch, bump, dent, discoloration - REALLY no nothing at all -

then no, there's no "hit". To be a hit and run then there has to have been a hit, or?

But: somebody once hit my car "just a tiny bit" as they saw it - "why should I call the cops, it was really tiny?" but the dent was huge and I got a judgment for $600 and collected on their lying a##. To the end they refused to admit anything. I just say that b/c I almost got really screwed once.

put yourself in their shoes. if there's no damage, scratch or otherwise would you mind if it happened to you? if not, don't worry about it. if yes, you need to get over it. accidents happen.

Anyone that drives a car has to expect some small minor scratches and dents. If you couldn't see it something tells me that if there was one the other cars owner can live with it.

You know you're guilty of nothing. Come clean about the non mishap that you caused and it will be better for all involved. Get a police report and leave it blank. I know it might result in some more nothingness but you'll feel better about the non event forever after. This may result in a noticeable absence of a fine or increase of your insurance rates so be prepared to not act appropriately.

Well la-di-da
You're good. Don't worry about it.

Personally I would say IF there was no damage, it was okay to leave. BUT you should have had a witness or 3rd party look at it to make sure there was no damage and take his name as testimony, just in case.

Here's a scenario;

Let's say someone saw you and took down your tag number after the incident, gave it to the owner of other car and owner of other car damaged it himself, saying that's how he found it, then called police, and they went after you. It would then be YOUR word against the owner of other vehicle PLUS his witness which took your tag. You would lose because you left the scene, regardless if you say there was no damage.

Let it go this time. But remember there are crooked people in this world. Next time carry a camera with you and keep it in your glove box, even if it's a disposable. I do it. Just in case. I call it my CYA camera for those "just in case" moments.

From a more legal standpoint-- it is a hit and run.

While there may not have been any visible damage, it is possible that the paint could have been broken down and will start to chip a few days later.

If this occurs, the owner of the vehicle could file a police report. If the police were to investigate and learn that you were the one that hit the car, you would be responsible for damages and would have commited a crime (hit and run).

So, yes, you could be held liable if the person learned that you were the one that hit the car (ie, witnesses, evidence, etc).

It is always best to give your information to the person. Also noting that there was no visible damage to the car when you left (having a camera around is useful for this).

D and G Gifts Etc
The proper thing to do is leave your information. Always carry a throw away camera this way you will be prepared for days like this. Even though you did not see a dent, scrapped paint or anything does not mean that damage was not done. I don't believe that any was done but again I am not a mechanic or a body shop guy. The best thing to do is to call the police they will then determine the level of involvement. For instance I drive an 18 wheeler and I literally crushed some guys truck with my trailer. I busted out all of the windows and caused body damage to the vehicle. His truck was parked at the time. I tried to locate the guy with no luck, I called the police and they told me to leave my information for the guy on his windshield that they were not going to come out for it. Now the truck was really messed up and I felt really bad for the guy but all I could do was leave all the information that I could with a phone number of our company. I also took a lot of pictures which saved my butt in the long run. He was parked in a no parking zone and he claimed that there was more damage than there actually was, This is why having a camera is a good idea. I would still contact the local police department and report what happened. If someone saw you hit the car and told this guy your plate number he could cause problems. Look at the Brittney Spears incident. She was charged with hit and run. The police will give you a better idea of how to proceed.

Wow. Just wow.

Haven't you ever parallel parked and had your bumper touch another car?

What do you think happens to your car when you leave it and someone else parks close by? You could probably hit bumpes at 5 MPH and not even scratch either car while parking.

There is no hit and run - that answerere is just pulling your leg.

You sound like a honest person .. My opinion unfortunately you did the best thing concerning your interests .Because if you would have left a note chances are you would be paying for a whole new paint job! Because you admitted guilt. Fact is you are the guilty party if you hit a car that is Stopped ,Parked (not moving) but there are a lot of dishonest people out there that will take advantage of a situation like this one.Don't lose any sleep over it

If there was no damage, dent, paint scrape, scratch, etc. don't worry about it. It's not a crime for two vehicles to touch. No damage,no problem.

No harm is no harm. If there was zero damage to my car, what would I want with your name and details?

I would have left and I would expect you to leave if you bumped mine. That's based on what you describe, NO damage at all.

From the sounds of it, I really don't think its a big deal, as long as there was no damage. I doubt this person will ever know or realize. Don't worry and congrats on being such a responsible person! I used to work in a tent that was in a parking lot and have seen my share of people who ram in to someone's vehicle, leave a huge dent and take off!

If it was a lawyer's car, you'll be getting a heavy medical bill and lawsuit for whiplash.

Even if the lawyer wasn't in the car.
