I am 16 years old and recently got arrested for petty theft. what consequences might I be facing in court?

I have never done anything like this before, my record is clean. I don't think petty theft is considered a felony but even so, would this occurence show on my record when I apply for a job?

Petty theft is not a felony, it's just what is states - a petty misdemeanor. There is no jail time associated with PM, usually fines and community service. Since you are still a juvenile, it will not be on your adult record. I would just make sure nothing happens again.

[Edit] HA - you can't be put on probation for a petty misdemeanor offense. There is nothing to get expunged because its a juvenile offense and will not show up on an adult record.

NO -- Don't sweat it... You probably won't even have to go to court. JUST LEARN FROM THIS & DON'T DO IT AGAIN!!!

Was with a friend once that stole something & she never heard anything further... She learned her lesson though, she was scared shitless!!!

I am not certain what state you are in, but this should be enough the scare you. The prosecutor's office should have a recommendation which will most likely include restitution, community service and a probationary period.

Get an attorney! Future job applications may simply ask if you have ever been convicted of a felony - which is not your case, others may simply ask have you ever been arrested. In some states this question is illegal, but you will need to know how to properly answer them in the future. Also, people make errors in judgment and if you can keep it at a one time thing and get through your probation period, it could be omitted from your record. Although you won't have one being a minor.

You will face restitution and probation. Once processed and you are off of probation, you can have your record purged because of your age and the fact that you are a first offender.

im in britain and it will be on your record as a minor, dont know about american law if your there.

Over here, after i think its 2 years the slate is wiped clean, you could have been a very naughty boy and once you turn 17/ 18 you then have am adult criminal file, your Juvey one will still stay in existence but under the adult one,

basically dont do anything wrong again (or dont get caught) and youl be ok when going for a job, also some, not all, some employers like the honesty of people when they say they have done wrong in the past, but have learned from the mistake and moved forward

You seem a bit more concerned than most...
Was this a dare or something?
What else is going on with you?
Do you just want some attention?
Normally, a 16 yr old that is truly bad won't worry so much about court.
It kinda depends on the judge, if he wants to make an example out of you, he just might lock you up for a few days.
If he's easy (and you're lucky), maybe probation.

LIFE if you don't change your ways!!!

If this is your first problem with the law, probably community service.

Yes.
I'm 13, bucked on a teacher's cell phone, and it went down in my records. But,since it was my first theft office [I only had 2 others for fighting],I went to court & the charges were dropped.
Good luck!!

Most likely no. You are not 18 years of age. But that doesn't matter, whats worse is that you are now considered a "known thief". No one will trust you. And when you are thief everyone will know, people will spread it like fire. What were you thinking? I mean people make mistakes, but stealing? Nothing is worse than being a murderer, molestor, or a thief. I'd move out of town and change your name. No I don't know from my experience-but I know thieves and NO ONE trusts them.

Sadie
You'll probably get a suspended sentence or put on probation. I doubt you'll actually "serve time."

stormey_84074
It is not a felony dear, and you will probably get a fine and possibly court probation. Hope you learned from this, you will not go to jail for petty theft. Be good and stay out of troupble

As long as you're under 18 you should be o.k. (I was arrested a # of times as a teen for mosty shoplifting & I can still get jobs without a problem. (I'm 36)

Depends on which state you live in. The worth of what you stole determines the severity. Even if it were a felony, in many states it will be expunges (erased) from your record after 5 yrs if you stay clean. However, you will probably get community service. In our state we also fine and punish the parents. Keep in mind that there are many jobs that require a state license or involve working with people that you will not be able to get with a criminal record, such as police, fire, EMT, nurses, etc. Please learn from this - whatever caused you to do it, eliminate it. At your age, I will bet it involves friends. They aren't worth it! Good luck!
