Im 32 yo female in Denver, CO-already started the process for putting myself through the academy, but Im worried b/c I got 2 DUI's when I was 18. I dont want to go through this whole process just to find out I wont be able to get on anywhere-any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Well, the dui's happened 14 years ago so the time frame is working in your favor. I would assume you have to get a state license to become a firefighter. Contact the state of Colorado's licensing department and see what the stipulations are to get a firefighter license. Usually the academy won't let you join without a license.
If a license isn't needed, then try contacting a fire fighting department that is in the state of CO, but nowhere near you so that you can ask them anonymously about your chances with the dui's on your record. If they don't have the answer then I'm sure they tell you where to get the information.
FYI, I'm in TX and am going through a similar situation trying to get into a school to become a licensed electrician. I also have 2 dui's and they are more recent than yours. I had to fill out a past criminal history report and submit it to Austin (capital of TX) and they approved me for a license even with the dui's on my record. Now I'm just hoping to get into the school.
TX is usually a lot more picky when it comes to their laws (especially dui's) and they approved me, so I'm thinking your chances are pretty good! Good Luck and hats off to you for choosing such a great career! |

ah, glad you told me it was when you were 18. Should not be a problem if you are 'clean' since.
