Find answers to your legal question.

I believe guns create more crimes. What is your opinion?

America is the country with the most number of shootings in the world. Isn't it?
I have posted a question about reasons why it is so easy to own a gun in America and all the answers I got were from apparently Americans who believed that you need guns for self-defense. I disagree. Guns create more crimes rather than prevent potential crimes.
It is much easier to kill someone with a gun than with a knife.
Besides, how do you explain all the accidental shootings committed by teenagers and even young kids who didn't know what they were doing?
You cannot blame them for playing around with a gun. They might have thought guns are like toys or it was cool to own a gun.
Do you remember the young boy who threatened to shoot his classmates in Ohio?
He did, even though his high school had metal detectors.
Using a gun is one skill that you do not want to teach your young children.
Additional Details
There should be "Zero-tolerance Policy" for anyone who have guns except for police officers and hunters.
There's got to be a way to prevent potential shootings committed by criminals.
Anyone with guns should be prosecuted right away because they remain dangerous to the public. They should not be released until they realize what could have happened if they had used guns.
This tough law would have prevented all the tragic shootings in Virginia Tech University, at a mall in Nebraska, and in Northern Illinois University.
I am just scared and wouldn't be surprised if another shooting rampage happens in America.

In reality, people who lost their tempereare mentally ill or by criminals.

I so disagree with your last statement. I don't own any guns yet I know for a fact that teaching children about guns and gun safety makes them far less likely to want to play with a gun. When I was growing up my father taught my brothers and I how to use a gun and more importantly how to safely use a gun. We never had a desire to touch a gun. Kids brought guns to school all the time. You saw them in the back window of their pickups on a gun rack. No one ever shot anyone or even pulled a gun out back then. The curiousity of guns comes into play when you try to keep guns away and do not explain their use or the importance of safety.

Most crimes involving guns are done with illegal guns. Illegal guns are less likely to be identified with the shooter.

Our stringent drug laws have completely gotten them off the streets.

Oh, wait...

Bottom line is that criminals are going to get their guns, no matter how illegal they are. Having armed criminals and unarmed law abiding citizens is not the way to go.

Lets look at Australia which just made a law banning ALL weapons 2 years ago. You know what happened? Crime went up 300% because the only people who had guns were the CRIMINALS...people don't have ANY WAY TO PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM THEFT AND MURDER!

If a person wants to harm others they will find a way to do it...I particularly don't trust the cops based on their lack of wanting to do their job.

We will ALWAYS have crimes with guns...but it isn't the guns fault, it is the person behind the trigger!

The only thing gun laws do...is stop good law abiding citizens from owning and carrying guns...no laws will ever stop a criminal from carrying a gun.

Criminals will use a gun or something else if a gun is not available. Guns only make crimes more lethal.

Criminals kill people. Take their guns, they will use a knife.

We are Constitutionally given the right to bear arms. After freedom of speech and religion, our founders thought it was the next most important right.

I believe immoral people commit crimes! Guns cannot commit crimes, I promise!

Actually the opposite is true.

Places where guns have been outlawed such as England and Australia the crime rates skyrocketed because the criminals knew that the victims would not be able to defend themselves.

Making guns illegal does not eliminate guns any more than making drugs illegal eliminates drugs.

Guns are still smuggled in like drugs.

The criminals are always able to get guns illegally.

When guns are made illegal it is only the honest upstanding members of the public that cannot get guns.

The criminal dregs of society can always get guns because they do object to breaking the laws of the nation to begin with.

When I was in college back in the 1960s I remember the theory among my Sociology professors was that if people could not defend themselves against criminals they would become more generous and willing to let the government spend money on the poor.

supposedly this would eliminate the criminals because the criminals would be grateful to us for spending money on them.

That obviously did not work. However the publications did get several of my Sociology Professors tenure which was their goal.

Now they have easy jobs with very little required work and great pay.

Many Sociology Professors solved their tenure troubles with those kinds of theories.

Unfortunately those theories did not do anyone else any good.

Also my old Sociology professors keep making a bundle off the textbooks that they wrote with those theories back in the goofy 1960s.

They make those books required reading for their classes so their students are forced to buy those textbooks at exhorbitant prices.

This makes a small fortune for the professors from the textbook sales.

The theories have not changed. The only thing my old Sociology Professors change is the copyright dates to make the books sound like they were written last year.

A whole new generation of Collge students is snookered by those old goofy discredited theories of the 1960s that my former Sociology Professors wrote when they were stoned out of their minds.

Oh yeah, I've seen guns out committing crimes all the time! You think it's easier to kill with a gun than a knife? You don't know much about knives either. Funny thing, three generations of my family all know how to shoot, clean, some can even repair (gunsmith) guns. None of them has ever killed a human being. My mother sent a burglar scampering off into the night with her .38. My uncle and his neighbor surprised two gas siphoning thieves and when they tried to run the neighbor fired his shotgun into his lawn. The thieves stopped where they were and when the cops got there they got out of their car laughing their heads off--both of the guys had wet their pants! My grandfather never got to his gun or the scumbag that choked him to death with a lampcord so he could steal his TV would be dead, not my grandpa. I have grandpa's gun, the one he never got to use in self-defense. That's my opinion.

If guns create crime than all you see is the criminals that have guns, how many crimes have been avoided because of crimes?
You don't see that do you?

I learned to use a gun when I was seven. My family lives on a remote farm and we have guns to scare predators away from the animals, to destroy problem animals like gophers, to put meat on our table and for peace of mind. My eldest child will be learning to safely handle a gun this summer. I think that when people hear the word "gun", they either get offensive or run for the hills. Guns don't create crimes. The criminals are the problem, and the ability of average law abiding citizens to protect themselves has been stymied. Every farm in my area has several guns. There has never been a murder, armed robbery, accidental shooting or any other gun crime within at least a hundred miles of here. Like the person above me said, do some research and come back with some facts.

I disagree. Some time ago, a community near Chicago had a rising crime rate. I think it was Oak Grove. The city passed an ordinance requiring every home owner to possess a gun in their home. They never enforced the ordinance, but their crime rate dropped every year for at least 5 years while the crime rate increased during that time in ALL the neighboring communities.

If you believe that is the guns causing the crimes, then you should start blaming your pencil when you make a math mistake. You can blame your car if you get a speeding ticket.

people creat crime, not guns.
even if guns were never created, people would still kill and hurt one another in some other shape or form.

Also, im a 15 yo girl and my father has PROPERLY taught me how to use a gun.
i dont think its cool and i take using a weapon such as a gun as a serious resposibility.i believe it is the job of the parent or gaurdian to properly teach his or her child the ways to handle a gun and to stress the fact that it is not a toy and is something that should never be flaunted.

Another thing is these kids that have done shootings wouldve done something else darastic if they didnt have a gun, because they want the attention and they most likely feel that since theyre suffering, then others should too.I dont know why they have to hurt many other people also but thats jus reality

We don't have access to enough guns. I know you don't believe but hear me out. If the rules are no guns allowed on campus then who can react to save your skin when the assailant starts shooting from a gun he bought illegally. Metal dectors are expensive and can't be everywhere. If the robber or otherwise shooter thought someone could take him out then maybe he wouldn't attempt his crime.
Guns are not toys and should be locked up when unsupervised.

Guns are inanimate objects. They do not create anything. Human beings with ill intent create crime and will do so with or without guns. I'd much rather live in a place like the United States where honest, law-abiding citizens are armed in such a fashion as to make the criminal's job as dangerous as possible. Guns in the hands of decent citizens are a far greater deterrent to crime than contributor to it.

As for "zero-tolerance", that's what I have for those who would disarm citizens. You're welcome to leave, don't let the door at the port hit you in the butt on your way out.

Teaching children about using guns would make it safer education is a good thing not bad... It's your right its American heritage

Believe whatever you want.
Guns have been proven to REDUCE crime.
It's no longer up for argument.

Let me try and explain. What is your opinion on alcohol. Children drink and drive, and kill people. Children think it is cool to drink. I am sure that the drunk child did not mean to wreck and kill others. You can't blame them for getting drunk.
I can keep going and compare firearms to other acceptable things in our society. You have to remember this. A gun is an object. It does not have the ability to do anything. It requires a person to pick it up and operate it. A gun cannot create more crimes. That is scientifically impossible. People create more crimes. As to teaching a child about guns, you teach a child about a gun, and there will not be an accidental shooting. Just as if you teach a child about alcohol, they will not get drunk, go driving and kill someone.

lets outlaw the guns and keep the idiots. Or should we outlaw the idiots and keep the guns?

I don't believe they create more crimes. They may make an already pre-meditated plan easier to carry out, but they certainly do not create anything of the sort. Even so, we have this seven day waiting period for a reason. To check their background. Anything that sticks out and they cannot buy one. And if you're concerned about a child getting into guns; be responsible. Lock the d*mn things up and not tell them where the keys or combination are located. It's simple, really.

My opinion is that your opinion kills many more people than guns do.

If you don't understand that Laws only apply to Law abiding people, then you will never understand and your opinion will continue to kill innocent people.

There should be a no tolerance policy for your opinion.

WAIT!! THERE IS!!

It's called the 2nd Amendment!

It is against the law for YOUR OPINION to interfere with my right to own a firearm.

Whew!! That was close.

Thank you for sharing your opinions...
not a fact in there, but they are your opinions.
"...Guns create more crimes rather than prevent potential crimes."
Not so - the most gun-restrictive cities in the US are also the worst per capita
for gun violence.
"It is much easier to kill someone with a gun than with a knife."
It's even easier with a car...twice as many people die from auto crashes. If you REALLY want to kill someone, send them to a Doctor.
"You cannot blame them for playing around with a gun."
No - but you can blame their parents who have not only not taught the children that these weapons are not to be played with, but failed to secure them in a child-proof manner...just like medicines.
"Using a gun is one skill that you do not want to teach your young children."
Wrong - see above. Ignorance may be bliss, but it's poor policy.

ole max.
my guns have never killed anyone? hey lets crack down on criminals and see if there is any correlation?

The second amendment protects our right to bear arms, but what about the rights of people who live in fear of being shot at school, work, ect. There was a lock down at my school one day and I was scared to death that some kid was going to come into my classroom and shoot all the kids (and me!)
All the students were hiding under the tables and I was stuck holding the door shut (I'm a substitute teacher, so I don't have a key) The kids were completely silent and frightened because we didn't know what was going on.

I would like to live in a world where it would be hard for angry teenagers to get their hands on lethal weapons.

Sulkahlee
I don't believe the problem is 'guns.' The problem is our culture.
We live in a culture where things have just gone crazy! Somebody does something that you believe is an insult to you, you whip out your gun, your knife, you call in all your buddies and you whup a**! You don't stop and ask, "Was that person even talking to me?" "Did they even know I was here?" Were they talking (muttering) to themselves about themselves?"
Ignorence and the fear of what you don't know or understand. ( as in the sad story of some kids in a gang down in Florida who killed a couple of tourests because they thought these other folks were flashing 'gang signs.' All the inocent couple were doing was talking! They were deaf and useing sign language!)
Somebody is different from you and seems weaker so you pick on them, beat on them, tease and harass them until they are so crazed and uncaring of themselves and others and hate you so much that they eventually "break" and start killing (often with guns, but maybe with anything else they can lay hand on).
Hating those who are different, Trying to make others seem to be "less" so you can feel "greater". A society that emphasizes "winning" at any cost rather than playing a good game. That's a large part of the problem.
Of course if we could convince Gangs and such that killing from a distance with a gun, especially in a drive by is cowardly and not in the least macho or cool. Yeah, then all we'd have to do is convince the leaders of various countries that it is they, personally with their own hands, risking thier own lives, who should fight these silly little wars and not the young men and women of their countries. Maybe then there wouldn't be any wars.

Dear Stacey,

America is not the country with the most shootings in the world, but we do have the most guns. We also do not have the highest violent crime rate of the industrialized world. The United States didn't even make the "top 10" list of industrialized nations whose citizens were victimized by crime.

http://www.geoffmetcalf.com/guncontrol_20010302.html

Guns cannot possibly create crimes. They are lifeless objects incapable of doing such a thing. Guns are used for self-defense FAR more than they are used for murdering people. It is estimated that Americans use firearms defensively 2-2.5 million times a year while they are involved in about 30,000 homicides. Legitimate defensive use by law-abiding citizens greatly outweighs the abuse by criminals. Guns may make it easier to kill, but it also makes it possible for the weak and elderly to defend themselves otherwise they would be easy targets for thugs. Guns simply level the playing field so that anyone carrying one has the same advantage as anyone else and nobody can be easily victimized, especially when the criminals do not know who could be carrying a firearm concealed.

There are not very many accidental shootings in the United States. You have more of a chance dieing from an accident involving a swimming pool, space heater, or bicycle than you do from a firearm.

Check out the fatal accidents chart at this site. Fatal gun accidents are extremely rare: http://www.guncite.com/gun_control_gcgvacci.html

Most teenagers do not think guns are toys unless their parents failed to teach them better. You should blame those parents rather than the parents who teach their kids gun safety and take them shooting. The kids that learn about real guns aren’t going to pick one up and think it is a toy like perhaps your kids would (if you even have any)

They have a "Zero-tolerance Policy" on guns in Washington, DC. Washington, DC also has the highest murder rate in the United States. Banning guns only benefits the criminals because they will continue to have them even if they are banned and they will have more unarmed innocent people to victimize.

In a perfect world no one would need a gun and there would be no crime.

But it's not a perfect world. Maybe on some level, it's unfortunate firearms were invented. But the level of fear and war and men attacking men really wasn't any more rare in the distant past when men attacked each other with stones or metal blades or flaming carcasses from catapults.

Weapons technology has always been about each side trying to get an advantage. Now we debate the firearm as if it were something new. In Roman times, only the rich and powerful were allowed to have swords, and only the King's friends and family were allowed to have weapons. The peasants weren't allowed to be armed. Why? Was it for their own good? Was it so they wouldn't fight and hurt each other? Was it so the guys with the swords would have more power?

Nothing really has changed, except that we "let" the wealthy and celebrities and government employees be armed and try to make it hard for the ordinary person to arm himself.

Odd though, that one of the most peaceful times of history was actually the late 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries in America, where generally the common man was well armed.

Oswald killed the president with a rifle he bought by mail order. The politicians demanded that be stopped and they passed the first sweeping new restrictions on guns in 1968. That stopped that! Now we live in perfect peace! True? False?
